Men's Basketball Loses Another To Injury

Oct. 31, 2000

LOS ANGELES - UCLA senior Rico Hines has a torn lateral meniscus (cartilage) in his right knee and will undergo surgery on Wednesday. The arthroscopic procedure will be performed by Bruin team physician Dr. Gerald Finerman at the UCLA Medical Center.

Hines, a 6-5, 210-pound senior from Greenville, NC, injured his right knee on Friday (Oct. 27) during practice. After a re-evaluation of the knee on Saturday, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) was ordered for Monday, revealing the cartilage tear. The estimated rehabilitation time is approximately four-to-six weeks.

On Oct. 12, Bruin head coach Steve Lavin announced Hines will miss UCLA's first two games of this season for a violation of team rules. He was to miss the Bruins' exhibition home opener vs. Team Concept on Wednesday (Nov. 1) and UCLA's Nov. 9 season-opener vs. Kansas in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Hines will now serve his two-game suspension when he is cleared to play following his rehabilitation stint, Lavin said.

Hines has appeared in 72 games during his three-year Bruin career, starting 15 contests and averaging a career 12.8 minutes. As a junior last season, he appeared in 29 games with seven starts, averaging 14.7 minutes, 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds.

UCLA has now lost two players to injury. On Oct. 27, UCLA announced that true freshman Josiah Johnson will miss four-to-six weeks because of a stress fracture in his left foot. Johnson, a 6-7, 237-pound forward who last season earned honorable mention USA Today high school All-America as a senior at Montclair Prep, did not require surgery. He was placed in a walking boot, will be on crutches for about a week and re-evaluated after the first four weeks in the walking boot. Johnson is the son of Bruin great Marques Johnson and the younger brother of Kris Johnson, who was a UCLA standout from 1995-98.
