Bruin Varsity Club Hosts 2014 Winter Networking Night
By: UCLA Athletics
The Bruin Varsity Club hosted over 100 current and former student-athletes and 13 alumni mentors in its 2014 Winter Networking Night on Jan. 16 in the Pavilion Club in Pauley Pavilion.

The networking event allowed current student-athletes and young alumni Bruin Varsity Club members to make connections and engage with experienced Bruin professionals. Alumni mentors in a wide range of various professional backgrounds shared their knowledge and professional insight about the job market and helpful career development tips about life during and after college. Some of the professions that were represented at the Networking Night were Sports Broadcasting, Sales, Career Development & Business Management, Marketing, Entertainment PR, Real Estate and many more.

The night began with a panel discussion moderated by Mike Vanneman, a former UCLA soccer player and now the Managing Principal of TVG Executive Search firm. Vanneman led a Q&A session with seven of the participating mentors who divulged details about their current job, how they got to that position, networking and interview tips and common mistakes they made but which were valuable learning experiences on their journey into the real world. Following the panel discussion, each of the 13 Alumni Mentors took their place at a roundtable, where the current and former student-athletes sat down for three rounds of 20-minute intimate conversations led by the participating mentor.

The night ended with a social mixer where current and former student-athletes were able to thank the mentors for their time and set up future meetings so as to continue to build their networks and discuss possible internship and job opportunities.

UCLA Athletics and the Bruin Varsity Club are dedicated to providing valuable mentoring and networking opportunities for current and former student-athletes to stay connected to the Bruin family and to ensure that they are given the best tools possible for success for life after UCLA. These Networking Nights are held quarterly, both on and off campus, and we strongly encourage all of our great Bruin student-athlete alumni to get involved.
