UCLA Athletics Announces Initiatives, Goals for Centennial Campaign
By: UCLA Athletics
The University of California, Los Angeles announced its $4.2 billion Centennial Campaign today, with the Athletic Department targeting $260 million in funds raised between 2013 and 2019.

During the Centennial Campaign, UCLA Athletics' primary objective is to create a financially-sustainable future to build upon its standing as the premier intercollegiate athletics program in the nation. Dedicated to providing the student-athlete with a rewarding experience both academically and athletically, the Campaign will impact UCLA Athletics in three distinct ways: student-athlete support, creation of state-of-the-art facilities and the enhancement of operational support.

“Crucial to maintaining UCLA Athletics' storied success for the next 100 years is ensuring that our student-athletes are given the most scholarship and academic support possible, that our athletic facilities are among the best in the country and that our athletic programs have the necessary operational support to continue recruiting and competing at an elite level,” said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. “To date, UCLA Athletics has raised approximately $116 million of the $260 million goal established by the Centennial Campaign. While this is a number to be proud of for sure, it is simply not in our nature to be content. We will continue to push the boundaries of what is thought possible because at UCLA, we know no other way.”

Much as the Centennial Campaign impacts UCLA Athletics in three distinct ways, the Department’s goal for the Campaign is to raise resources for three key areas: operational support, endowment support and capital support.

Operational support, with a goal of $100 million, allows UCLA Athletics to provide the necessary annual resources that its coaches and student-athletes need for success. The primary vehicle for this type of support is the Wooden Athletic Fund. With nine levels of annual giving that range from $100 to more than $50,000 annually, all UCLA alumni, fans and friends have the ability to help champion UCLA student-athletes and lend valuable support to UCLA Athletics. These gifts to the Wooden Athletic Fund qualify all donors to receive exclusive benefits and recognition, including priority seating for football and men’s basketball.

Endowment support, with a goal of $35 million, is as straight-forward as endowing athletic programs and scholarships. The Forever Champions initiative, which seeks to build upon the strong foundation of perpetual resources provided by the original investors of the Four Deep Scholarship Endowment Campaign, was created to address scholarship support needs. Under its umbrella, donors can choose from four tiers ($125k, $250k, $500k, $1 million) to create an everlasting endowment, directed to the sport of choice, to support the educational and athletic experience of UCLA student-athletes for years to come while enjoying exclusive, lifetime benefits from the athletic department. Program endowments, on the other hand, supplement sport specific budgets and provide much needed support to the men and women leading UCLA student-athletes via a three-tiered system ($125k, $500k, $1 million).

Capital support, with a goal of $125 million, allows UCLA Athletics to construct and renovate athletic facilities that in turn provide the necessary flexibility in supporting students’ academic and athletic activities. While the $136 million Pauley Pavilion overhaul was not part of the Centennial Campaign, the recently-completed Mondo Super x 720 resurfacing of the track at Drake Stadium, as well as the ongoing Football Performance Center project, are indeed key components of the Campaign. In choosing award-winning architectural, planning, and interior design firm ZGF Architects LLP to design its new Football Performance Center and in selecting the same surface used at the 2012 London Olympic Games for the Drake track, expected to be one of the only installations of its type in the U.S., UCLA’s state-of-the-art upgrades under the Centennial Campaign will help ensure that Bruin student-athletes enjoy some the very best facilities in the entire country. Each and every facility that UCLA student-athletes utilize is currently being analyzed for upgrade or new construction. The goal by the end of the Campaign is to have overhauls either scheduled or completed that will greatly enhance all facilities under Athletic Department control.

With athletic department expenses projected to reach more than $80 million in 2014, nearly 97 percent of which is the responsibility of the UCLA Athletic Department, it is incumbent upon UCLA Athletics to generate revenue through private donations. An endowed, sustainable and unrestricted support program made possible through the generosity of private donations, along with other revenue such as ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and television rights fees, can be used to further invest in resources that range from coaches to travel and recruiting expenses to facilities.
