UCLA Student-Athletes Participate in Annual WAF Donor Thank-a-Thon

Student-athletes from UCLA's athletic teams will have called over 5,600 Wooden Athletic Fund donors by the end of next week, thanking them for their support of UCLA Athletics over the past year.

A selection of student-athletes from football, men's basketball, softball, volleyball, gymnastics, soccer, men's water polo, and swimming and diving took time out of their academic and training schedules this week to call donors to express their appreciation. More student-athletes from women's basketball, rowing and men's tennis will make calls next week.

"It's really great to have the chance to speak with our extended Bruin family on these calls," said gymnast Samantha Peszek. "I love hearing donors' excitement about UCLA Athletics."

Men's water polo player Matt Farmer recounted a conversation he had with a donor who was a member of the 1950 UCLA men's tennis team that won UCLA's first-ever NCAA team championship. "It was awesome to hear his story and connect with the great history here at UCLA," Farmer said.

The two-week-long annual event emphasizes how members of the Wooden Athletic Fund provide invaluable support for 700-plus UCLA student-athletes. Every gift has a positive impact on the ability of the student-athletes to succeed, not only in competition, but also in the classroom and the community.

"I learned a lot tonight about where the resources come from to support our program, and it was great to have a personal interaction with some of our fans," added Karsta Lowe from the women's volleyball and sand volleyball teams.

More than $11.66 million in charitable donations received by the Wooden Athletic Fund in 2013 have helped provide UCLA student-athletes with more than twice the scholarship funding that was available 10 years ago.
