Bruins Advance to Semifinals at NCAA Championships

West Windsor, N.J. - For the first time in program history, the UCLA women's rowing team sent all three boats through to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. The varsity eight and varsity four crews each recorded a third place finish in their preliminary heats while the second varsity eight earned a second finish place in theirs.

The Bruins' varsity eight crew came in third behind Michigan and USC in their heat after posting a time of 6:41.93. The Wolverines won the preliminary heat with a time of 6:38.48 while the Trojans clocked in at 6:40.49. UCLA bested fourth place Michigan State by almost five seconds as the Spartans came in with a time of 6:46.80. Cornell finished in fifth place with a time of 6:54.40.

UCLA's second varsity eight had the best finish of the day for the Bruins after posting a second place finish in their preliminary heat. They finished two seconds behind California, who won the heat with a time of 6:52.49. UCLA finished the race in 6:54.50. The Bruins finished ahead of Brown, Wisconsin and USC, who came in with times of 6:55.22, 6:56.49 and 7:01.65 respectively.

Like the varsity eight, UCLA's varsity four crew registered a third place finish, coming in just behind the Washington Huskies for second place. The Huskies edged the Bruins by coming in with a time of 7:21.32, just ahead of UCLA's 7:21.70. Virginia won the heat with a time of 7:16.70. The Bruins raced ahead of fourth place Stanford, who finished the race in 7:30.89, and fifth place Michigan, who posted a time of 7:32.62.

All three of UCLA's competing boats will race on Saturday morning in the semifinal races that will determine their position for Sunday's final races. The Bruins' varsity eight will race in the second semifinal race at 6:15 am PT against Yale, Princeton, Michigan, Ohio State and Washington. The second varsity eight will compete in the second semifinal race at 6:45 am PT against Stanford, Washington, Michigan, Ohio State and Yale. Finally, the varsity four will race at 7:15 am PT against Cornell, Ohio State, Virginia, Princeton and Wisconsin.
