The No. 5-ranked UCLA Men's Golf Team closed well after the first day of the Transamerica Western Collegiate, as the Bruins finished in first after 36 holes. The Bruins were up by eight strokes after the first round at 341 (-9), and maintained their lead in the second by shooting 361(+11), tied with #1 California for the best score of the second 18. That left the Bruins alone atop the leaderboard at 702 (+2) overall, and in position to capture a tournament featuring a number of highly ranked conference foes.

The UCLA team of six, dropping one score per round, played admirably across the board through the first 18. Seniors Pedro Figueiredo and Pontus Widegren were together outstanding, as Figueiredo shot 65 (-5) to lead the Bruins and Widegren followed closely behind at 66 (-4). Freshman Jonathan Garrick notched a 68 (-2), and sophomore Manav Shah and junior Anton Arboleda each notched a 71(+1). Matt Pinizzotto rounded out the first round scoring with a solid 72 (+2). Individuals Lorens Chan and Jay Hwang also had strong showings, shooting 70 (E) apiece.

Consecutive rounds are usually difficult, however, and the Western Collegiate's second set of 18 proved to be no exception. But even though the Bruins' score of 361 (+11) was 20 strokes higher than their previous effort, it would tie #1 Cal for the best tally of the round. This time Pontus Widegren took the reigns for UCLA, shooting 69 (-1) to lead the Bruins and finish the day atop the Individual leaderboard. Jonathan Garrick shot a 78 (+8) and Matt Pinizzotto shot an 80 (+10). The Bruin individuals played a solid round, as Lorens Chan shot a 67 (-3) and Jay Hwang carded a 70 (E).

The two rounds leave UCLA in prime position to take the tournament, but the Bruins will have to be careful to maintain their groove and avoid underestimating some talented opponents. Tee times for Sunday can be found here.
