Outdoor Track & Field Earns Two Preseason Rankings
By: UCLA Athletics

March 20, 2013

For the first time since 2010, the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams have both earned preseason top-25 rankings. Using marks from the 2012 outdoor season and the early portion of the 2013 season, the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association have projected the Bruin men at No. 12 (149.07 points) and the women at No. 24 (85.28 points). Indoor marks are not considered for these computer-based rankings.

For the men, this is their highest preseason rank since they were rated sixth in 2009, while the women currently boast their highest preseason since 2010 when they were No. 18.

This preseason recognition comes well deserved after strong performances for UCLA Track & Field at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The men and women finished 17th and 21st, respectively, at last year's season finale courtesy of scoring results from Mike Woepse (2nd in pole vault), Alec Faldermeyer (3rd in hammer), Marcus Nilsson (6th in decathlon), Turquoise Thompson (2nd in 400m hurdles), Ida Storm (5th in hammer), and Kylie Price (7th in long jump). All six Bruins are returning for the 2013 outdoor season.

Another importance piece for the men's squad will be the presence of RS junior Julian Wruck. Wruck, a transfer from Texas Tech, is the 2011 NCAA outdoor discus champion. Last season, he redshirted but still competed throughout the outdoor season as an unattached athlete. So far in 2013, the Australian native has already thrown his way into the UCLA record books. In his Bruins debut at the Claremont Winter Throws Invitational in mid-February, Wruck had a throw of 64.91m/212-11 to rank second all-time in Bruins history.

The Bruin women positively impacted their preseason nomination with two event victories this past weekend in San Diego at the Aztec Invitational. Junior Ida Storm opened her season with a win in the women's hammer throw (65.66m/215-06) and senior Allison Koressel jumped her way to a victory in the women's pole vault (4.03m/13-2.5).

The men open their season this weekend at the Texas State Elite Meet in San Marcos, TX and both squads will continue the Texas road trip next week at the Texas Relays.
