UCLA Head Coach Valorie Kondos Field

On Danusia Francis' side aerial:

"She just learned it this summer. It's never been competed in college. We've been training it, and if she wanted to put it in beam finals it was up to her. That was stunning. I knew the crowd would go crazy. I know with our current Code of Points that we need to keep encouraging interesting gymnastics. The more pressure there is, the better she competes."

On how Danusia came to UCLA:

"She had been talking with someone on a message board. Her mother contacted me and told me that she had good grades. I knew about her. I knew she was stunning as a gymnast, but I did not know that she was that good of a student. She's very homesick. She's not what she looks like. She's not a diva. She scheduled a meeting with me a few weeks ago. When she came into my office, she said she just needed a hug. I asked if she was homesick and she said 'yes.'"

On the overall competition:

"We've had so many compliments from the student-athletes about Pauley, the competition, and even the flash mob at the end."

UCLA Freshman Danusia Francis

On the new skill she competed:

"We just call it a side aerial. I was working on it a lot before the season, and I warmed it up before today's competition. It's like a cartwheel without hands but sideways. I talked about doing it last night with some coaches. If I make beam finals again next year, it will make another appearance."

On why she came to UCLA:

"UCLA was always my favorite when I was watching videos. I was also interested in Florida, but I think I made the right choice. I was really homesick a few weeks ago, but my family is here right now. Obviously there's always homesickness, and there always will be with small things that I don't like here, but I couldn't have made a wrong choice in coming here."

On competing college gymnastics:

"All the experience of competitions before really helps here. The focus on details in college has been good for my gymnastics."
