LOS ANGELES - Four UCLA men's water polo players have been selected to All-MPSF Teams, as announced by the conference office Tuesday. Senior utility Josh Samuels was named to the first team while senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz and sophomore attacker Paul Reynolds were named to the second team. Junior defender Aimone Barabino was named as an honorable mention selection.
Samuels, a senior utility player from Villa Park, Calif., leads the Bruins with 65 goals, 48 assists, 50 steals and 33 field blocks. He ranks 11th among MPSF players with 2.24 goals scored per game. Samuels scored two or more goals in each of UCLA's matches at last weekend's MPSF Tournament and earned All-MPSF Tournament Team acclaim.
Rapacz, a senior goalkeeper from Orange, Calif., is in his second season as UCLA's regular starter. He ranks third among MPSF goalkeepers with a 6.63 goals against average. He also ranks 10th in the MPSF with 219 saves (9.20 saves per game).
Reynolds, a sophomore attacker from Santa Ana, Calif., has tallied 41 goals, the third-highest total on the team and 22nd in the MPSF. In addition, Reynolds ranks second on the team in assists (46) and steals (35) and is third in field blocks (13).
Barabino, a junior utility player from Recco, Italy, has scored 29 goals and tallied a team-best 64 earned exclusions. He has the highest shooting percentage on the team, scoring 53.7 percent of his shots (29-of-54). He was also named to the 2012 All-MPSF Tournament Team last weekend.
Pacific attacker Balazs Erdelyi earned MPSF Player of the Year honors after leading the league in scoring (83 goals, 3.46 goals per game). Stanford freshman Bret Bonanni was named the Newcomer of the Year. Long Beach State's Gavin Arroyo was named Coach of the Year.
UCLA enters the upcoming NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3-seed St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday, Dec. 1. Game time at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium is 3:12 p.m. No. 1-seed USC will take on No. 4-seed Air Force in the other semifinal match Saturday at 1 p.m.
