Bowen struck first, giving the United States a 1-0 lead, on a power play at the 7:19 mark of the first period. But Italy responded with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead with 4:22 left in the opening period. Bowen scored again on another extra man opportunity to stop the Italian run, but Italy scored a late goal to build a 5-2 lead heading into the second.

Italy scored the first two goals of the second quarter and built a 7-2 lead with 4:15 remaining. Team USA battled back, closing out the half with goals from Bowen and Bret Bonanni, to cut the deficit to 7-4 at halftime.

But Italy dominated the third period, blanking Team USA, 3-0 in the third, heading into the fourth period with its largest lead of 10-4.
