No. 2 UCLA Trounces Whittier, 27-2

REDLANDS, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 27-2 win over Whittier this afternoon in the Bruins' final game of the Inland Empire Classic. Sophomore Danny McClintick led UCLA with a season-high four goals. A total of 13 different players scored for UCLA, including eight players with multiple scores.

The Bruins jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first period. Senior Chris Wendt got the Bruins on the board first with a power play goal. UCLA got counter attack goals from McClintick and junior Paul Reynolds. Freshman Lovre Milos also scored on a counter attack in the opening period, marking the seventh straight game to open the season that he has scored. Senior Aimone Barabino also scored on a counter attack and notched his second goal from two meters.

UCLA increased its lead to 15-0 by halftime, scoring nine more goals in the second quarter while pitching another shutout on defense. Freshman Gordon Marshall got things started with a power play goal, extending his scoring streak to seven straight games to open the season. Redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi scored on a counter attack and senior Paul Pickell scored from the front court to put UCLA up 9-0. Then redshirt freshman Alec Zwaneveld scored from two meters to push his scoring streak to seven games. A trio of Bruins tallied their second goal of the game when Paul Reynolds scored on a penalty shot and McClintick and Wendt scored on counter attacks. Senior Lucas Reynolds scored the final two goals of the half on strikes from two meters.

The Bruins led 22-0 through three periods after scoring seven more goals in the third while pitching their third straight shutout. Paul Reynolds and McClintick each completed hat tricks with scores from the front court to open the scoring in the third quarter. McClintick then added his fourth goal on a counter attack. Sophomore Anthony Daboub scored his only goal of the game on a counter attack and Pickell picked up his second goal from the front court to put UCLA up 20-0. Barabino completed his hat trick with a counter attack score and Mirarchi added his second goal of the game, also on a counter attack, to end the third period scoring.

UCLA surrendered two power play goals in the fourth quarter, but outscored the Poets 5-2 to post the 27-2 final score. Freshman Chancellor Ramirez scored his only goal of the game from the front court and then Lucas Reynolds completed his hat trick from two meters. Then Mirarchi scored from two meters to finish a hat trick of his own. Milos picked up his second goal of the game on a shot from the front court and then junior Christopher Meinhold scored his first of the day on a 6-on-5 opportunity to end the scoring.

The Bruins were 3-for-3 on power plays and converted their only penalty shot. Whittier was 2-for-9 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner started in goal and played the first half, registering three saves. Junior Stephen White played the final third quarter and was credited with two stops while redshirt junior James Hartshorne played the fourth quarter and also made two saves.
