IRVINE, Calif. -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 17-0 on the season with a 12-3 win at No. 9 UC Irvine (11-4) this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the SoCal Invitational. Freshman Ryder Roberts scored a hat trick to lead UCLA as nine different Bruins scored.

The 17-0 start to the season is the sixth-longest winning streak in UCLA history and the best since the 2004 national championship squad won 18 consecutive games.

Sophomore Danny McClintick got the Bruins on the board first with a goal from the front court (5:54). Then senior Lucas Reynolds scored a power play goal (2:49) to put UCLA up 2-0. The Anteaters ended the scoring in the first period with an extra man goal (2:39) by Jacob Mourer.

Mourer tied the game at 2-2 with another exclusion goal (4:20) to open the scoring in the second quarter. But Roberts scored three unanswered goals from the front court and UCLA never looked back. His first two goals came in the second period (3:09 and 2:40) and gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead at halftime.

The Bruins dominated the second half, outscoring UC Irvine 8-1. UCLA pitched a shutout in the third period, 4-0. Roberts completed his hat trick to open the third period scoring (6:39). Senior Chris Wendt made it 6-2 with a goal from the front court (4:20) and then junior Paul Reynolds extended the lead to 7-2 with a 6-on-5 score (3:20). Redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi ended the scoring in the third quarter with a counter attack strike (1:45) to give the Bruins an 8-2 advantage heading into the fourth.

Freshman Chancellor Ramirez scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter from the front court to push UCLA's lead to 10-2 (6:16 and 2:15). Freshman Lovre Milos made it nine unanswered goals for UCLA after UCI tied it at 2-2 with a counter attack goal (1:50). Jared Osborn snapped the Bruins' scoring streak with a power play goal at the 1:23 mark of the fourth. Junior Chris Fahlsing ended the scoring with a goal from the front court (0:58) to provide the final margin of 12-3.

The Bruins were 2-for-4 on power plays while UC Irvine was 3-for-7. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA, playing three and one half quarters, while allowing two power play goals and registering 12 saves. Redshirt junior James Hartshorne played the last half of the fourth quarter in goal for the Bruins and allowed one power play goal while making two stops. Michael Bailey started in the cage for UC Irvine and played the first half while allowing eight goals and tallying three saves. Alex Kazmier played the second half, allowing four goals while making five stops.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow at 10:50 a.m. in the semifinals where they will meet the winner of the Stanford/California quarterfinal matchup.
