Series Meetings
UCLA is 67-79 all-time vs. Stanford. The Bruins defeated the Cardinal 10-5 last week in the semifinals of the SoCal Invitational at UC Irvine (Oct. 13). UCLA has defeated Stanford six straight times, dating back to the 2010 season. The Bruins are 7-0 all-time vs. Santa Clara, defeating the Broncos 17-3 last year in the first round of the SoCal Invitational.

Recapping Last Week
The No. 1 UCLA men’s water polo team finished second at the SoCal Invitational at Irvine, Calif., suffering its first defeat of the season, a 12-11 setback in double overtime to No. 2 USC in the finals. The Bruins led the Trojans 4-1 and 8-4, before allowing a goal at the buzzer at the end of regulation to tie it at 11-11. The Bruins opened with a 23-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Then UCLA posted a 12-3 win over the hosts, No. 9 UC Irvine in the quarterfinals. The Bruins shut down No. 4 Stanford in the semifinals, defeating the Cardinal 10-5.

Streaking Bruins
The 2013 Bruins’ 18-0 start to the season tied for the fifth-longest winning streak in UCLA history, equalling the 18 consecutive games won by the 2004 national championship squad.

Getting Defensive
The Bruins’ defense has been stellar all year, allowing only USC to score more than seven goals. USC put 12 up on the board in a 12-11 double overtime win in the finals of the SoCal Invitational (Oct. 13) and had its 41-game winning streak snapped by UCLA in the 9-8 loss in the finals of the NorCal Invitational (Sept 22). Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Garrett Danner leads the MPSF in goals against average (5.24 gaa) as the Bruins lead the MPSF as a team, allowing just 4.53 goals per game.

Freshman Forces
UCLA true and redshirt freshmen are making huge contributions in 2013. In addition to redshirt freshman goalkeeper Garrett Danner, there are six freshmen (only two of them redshirts) that are playing heavy minutes. The freshmen account for 39.5 percent of the team’s scoring (116-of-294 goals). Freshman Lovre Milos is tied for first on the team with 29 goals. Freshman Ryder Roberts is tied for 5th on the team in scoring with 21 goals. Freshmen Gordon Marshall (18 goals) and Jack Fellner (15 goals) are 7th and 8th (tied), respectively, on the team in scoring. Freshman Chancellor Ramirez is tied for 10th on the team with 14 goals. Roberts is currently 2nd on the team in assists (30) while Fellner and Danner are tied for the team lead in steals (27).

Scoring at a High Percentage
While UCLA ranks second in the MPSF in goals per game (15.47 gpg), the Bruins are currently scoring on 49.7 percent of their shots. Eleven Bruins are shooting better than 50 percent, led by redshirt freshmen Alec Zwaneveld’s 64.5 percent (11-for-17). Of the seven different Bruins averaging at least one goal per game, freshman Ryder Roberts leads the squad shooting at a 60.0 percent clip (21-for-35).

Against Ranked Teams
The Bruins are 12-1 (.923) against ranked teams in 2013. UCLA has outscored its opposition by 11.0 goals per game (294-85, 15.47-4.47 gpg). The Bruins are outscoring ranked teams by 7.85 goals per game (167-65, 12.85-5.00 gpg).

Wright On Deck For Year Five
The Bruins are led by fifth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 109-24 (.820) record, including a 24-8 (.750) mark in MPSF action. He won his 100th game last weekend with the 10-4 victory over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals of the SoCal Tournament (Sept. 21). Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, leading the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright played for the National Team in every major international tournament from 2001-12. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and three runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his four complete seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title. He has guided the Bruins to the title match of the NCAA Tournament in three of his four seasons (2009, 2011, 2012). Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
