Team USA Advances to Quarterfinals with 19-6 Win Over Japan

SZOMBATHELY, Hungary -- The USA Men's Junior National Team advanced to the quarterfinals of the FINA Men's Junior World Championships with a decisive victory today over Japan, 19-6.

There are a total of eight Bruins with Team USA, which includes: incoming freshmen Jack Fellner, Ryder Roberts, Chancellor Ramirez and Matt Farmer; redshirt freshmen Alec Zwaneveld and Garrett Danner and sophomore Danny McClintick. Current UCLA assistant coach, Dustin Litvak, is also an assistant coach with Team USA.

Bret Bonanni scored a game-high six goals and McQuin Baron stopped nine shots in the cage to pick up the victory over Japan. Team USA moves on to meet Italy in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 6:00 a.m. (PT). The match will be streamed live and is available by clicking here. The United States controlled the match from the opening sprint, posting a 4-0 lead in the first period. Bonanni scored twice along with a goal each from Ramirez and Fellner to build the lead.

The offense kept surging in the second period with goals from Fellner, Roberts, Bonanni, Zwaneveld, and Jackson Kimbell for a 9-0 lead with 2:48 to go in the first half. Japan would finally break through with two late goals in the period but the United States stayed in command, leading 9-2 at halftime.

The scoring bonanza continued in the third period with Team USA scoring six more goals. Roberts and Bonanni scored twice while Fellner and Farmer also found the back of the net. Japan would score just once in the period leaving the United States ahead 15-3 going into the fourth.

the Japanese offense started to get on track in the final period scoring three goals but that was topped by four goals from the United States. Nolan McConnell, Bonanni, Zwaneveld, and Farmer all scored to help Team USA coast to a 19-6 victory.

Team USA was 6-for-7 on power plays while Japan was 3-for-4. Neither side attempted a penalty shot.

The United States is now 3-0-1 in Hungary. Team USA opened competition with an 8-6 loss to Spain on Aug. 12. Roberts was the only Bruin to score in that game, netting one late in the first period. The Americans would rebound to post its first victory, a 12-10 win over Slovakia, on Aug. 13. Four Bruins scored in that contest with Roberts picking up two goals and McClintick, Ramirez and Zwaneveld each scoring once. Danner got the start in the cage and made 12 saves. Team USA then won its group with an impressive 11-9 win over Russia on Aug. 14. Roberts again led all Bruins with two scores while Ramirez and McClintick each added one goal. Danner again started in goal for Team USA, registering six stops.
