LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team advanced to tomorrow's NCAA Championship title game at No. 1 USC with a 17-3 win over No. 3 St. Francis Brooklyn at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Griffin White led all scorers with four goals.
Senior Griffin White single-handedly outscored the Terriers with four goals on the day. Junior Paul Pickell added three scores for the Bruins. Three different Bruins scored twice in the game, including junior Lucas Reynolds and sophomores Paul Reynolds and Chris Fahlsing.
Luka Vukomanovic led St. Francis Brooklyn with two scores.
Senior Josh Samuels got the Bruins on the board first, scoring with 7:37 left in the first period on a penalty shot. Then White made it 2-0 UCLA with 56 seconds remaining in the first on a counter attack. But Mukomanovic ended the first period scoring at 2-1 with an answer with 36 seconds left.
The Bruins dominated the second period, scoring five unanswered goals while pitching a shutout. Pickell extended the Bruins' lead to 3-1 on a score with 6:33 left in the second period. Paul Reynolds made it 4-1 at the 4:11 mark with a power play goal. Then freshman Anthony Daboub put the Bruins up 5-1 with 3:38 left. Lucas Reynolds became the sixth different Bruin to tally an NCAA goal, putting UCLA up 6-1 with 2:24 remaining in the second period. Paul Reynolds scored his second on a penalty shot with 10 seconds left to put the Bruins up 7-1 at halftime.
The Bruins opened the third period with a penalty score by White with 7:44 remaining to go up 8-1. Vukomanovic added his second goal at 7:01 to end the Bruins' six-goal scoring streak. Lucas Reynolds had an immediate response to put the Bruins up 9-2 with 6:50 to go. Then Fahlsing scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to make it 10-2 with 5:50 left. Sophomore David Culpan added his first score with 4:25 to go to push the lead to 11-2. Fahlsing added his second of the game at the 3:11 mark to make it 12-2. The Bruins scored on a two-on-none fastbreak with a give-and-go from White to Pickell for his second score of the day with 59 seconds left to end the third-period scoring at 13-2.
White completed a hat trick to start the fourth period with a goal at the 7:36 and then followed with his fourth score at 6:42 to put the Bruins up 15-2. Guram Nozadze scored with 5:58 remaining to snap a seven-goal streak by UCLA. Pickell completed his hat trick at the 4:23 mark to put the Bruins up 16-3. Freshman Danny McClintick got in on the scoring action with 1:27 remaining, finding the back of the net from six meters out to make it 17-3.
Senior Matt Rapacz started in the cage for UCLA and played the first three periods, registering six saves. Stephen White played the fourth period and picked up three stops in goal for the Bruins. Igor Mladenovic played the first three quarters for St. Francis, making seven saves while Luka Raic played the fourth for the Terriers and was credited with one stop.
The Bruins will face No. 1 USC at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium in the NCAA title game at 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 2. USC has won four straight NCAA Championships, including beating UCLA 7-4 in last year's final in Berkeley, Calif.
