Junior midfielder Sam Mewis will be blogging for UCLABruins.com during the 2013 season. Mewis is a regular with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and a two-time all-conference selection who has scored 28 points on nine goals and 10 assists in her two years as a Bruin.
The 2013 season is officially underway! On Tuesday of this week, we finally welcomed six of the eight freshmen to the team. The final two freshmen - Lauren Kaskie and Gabbi Miranda - are with junior Katelyn Rowland at an Under-20 National Team Camp just over at the StubHub Center. Good luck to them as they play Japan’s U20’s this Sunday!
After the freshmen moved into their temporary preseason dorms Tuesday morning, we all went to get our new practice uniforms and gear. We then had our traditional series of meeting in the press room, with Coach Linn (Sports Performance), Max Bertman (Athletic Training), Ken Weiner (Associate Athletic Director) and Matt Elliott (Compliance). Amanda, Lou and Josh then introduced us to Sam Greene and Michelle Jenkins, our new Directors of Operations. Val Henderson, a team alumna, was also present at the meeting, as she is going to be working with us during preseason. Finally, we were verbally informed about new goalkeeper coach, Aline Reis, who will arrive at the end of this week after driving cross-country . With the staff finally complete and the team officially together, the upcoming season is finally upon us.
After the meetings, we had an awesome team dinner at an Italian restaurant in Westwood. Caprice Dydasco and I got to sit with two of the freshmen, Lauren Kaskie and Alyssa Alarab, and our table talked nonstop. It was great to get to know some of the new girls in a casual environment before practices started. I think the dinner was a great way for us all to start getting to know each other, although by the looks of our calendar, we will see plenty of each other on and off the field for the remainder of the month!
On Wednesday morning, the team ran the first fitness test, with excellent results. Props to Belden Long for scoring the highest on the team! We then had an intra-squad scrimmage and another training session later in the afternoon, which were both very productive and fun. We’ll continue through these next two weeks of preseason before our first game on August 23rd.
This past weekend, eight of us successfully moved into our new apartments. A big shout-out to Men’s Soccer’s EJ Edwards and Football’s Steven Manfro for helping us out. I’m living with Rosie White and Sarah Killion in a one-bedroom apartment. We have managed to scrape together random pieces of furniture from the street and from friends, and it’s finally starting to appear liveable. The only thing of abundance that we do have is art to hang on the walls, as Rosie spends much of her free time drawing, painting, and crafting. The three of us are getting used to sleeping all in one room (someone might snore a little) but we are having a blast so far!
Also, Sarah, Rosie, Abby Dahlkemper, Chelsea Stewart and I all were lucky enough to go the Real Madrid vs. Everton game at Dodger Stadium last Saturday! It was such a cool experience to see two of the best teams in the world play in an American environment in a really unique atmosphere. We had a lot of fun and really enjoyed seeing players like Ronaldo, Kaka, Howard, and Ramos. After the first game, the LA Galaxy played Juventus, which was also an interesting match to watch.
It’s been an eventful week, and there is only more to come. See you next week! Go Bruins!
