UCLA, Washington Play to Scoreless Tie
By: UCLA Athletics
No. 3 UCLA earned its eighth shutout of the year but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Washington in a women's soccer contest on Monday evening at Drake Stadium.

The Bruins (10-1-1, 2-0-1) outshot Washington (5-5-2, 1-0-2) by a 24-4 margin and totaled 13 shots in the two overtime periods but were stymied by Husky goalkeeper Megan Kufeld, who made eight saves, and victimized by the crossbar at the end of the first overtime period.

UCLA completely dominated in the overtime periods, outshooting the Huskies 13-0, but Kufeld made four saves to keep the Bruins off the board, and UCLA was unlucky on several shots, particularly Sam Mewis' header with 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period that hit the crossbar. Additionally, Taylor Smith had a shot that went just wide of the left corner in the 93rd minute, and Darian Jenkins had a good look in the 95th minute but had her shot saved.

"I think we were unlucky not to score," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "We were already celebrating the one off the crossbar that Sam (Mewis) hit. Taylor (Smith) had one. A few of them we wish we had back. But that's the game of soccer sometimes."

The second half was also filled with missed opportunities, with UCLA misfiring or getting saved on eight shots. Smith had a good look in the 74th minute, getting free in the box after receiving a cross from Courtney Proctor, but her shot went wide of goal, and the ball was cleared out of danger. Proctor had a good shot blocked in the 85th minute, and Mewis went wide on a shot with 27 seconds left in regulation.

UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland picked up her seventh shutout of the year and made two saves in the match.

The Bruins have little time to rest before their next match on Thursday evening at Stanford. The match will be televised live at 7:30 pm on Pac-12 Networks.
