UCLA Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals with 2-0 Win over Stanford
By: UCLA Athletics
After being eliminated by Stanford three of the last four seasons, the 2013 UCLA women's soccer team turned the tables on its conference rival, defeating the Cardinal, 2-0, in the NCAA third round. With the win, the Bruins (20-1-2) advance to the quarterfinals, where it will face North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Stanford's season ends at the Bruins' hands with a 15-6-1 record.

UCLA received goals from Kodi Lavrusky and Taylor Smith, and goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland earned her 13th shutout of the year with a three-save performance.

Lavrusky gave UCLA a 1-0 lead at 12:57 after a nice give-and-go with Sam Mewis, burying her shot from the left side of the field to the far post for her sixth goal of the season.

Stanford had its first shot in the 25th minute, with Taylor Uhl taking a dangerous shot, but Rowland was there to make the kick save.

Lavrusky nearly made it 2-0 UCLA a few minutes later when Mewis sprung her ahead of the defense with Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell onrushing. Lavrusky had to come back to the ball and had a good look at the goal, but Campbell somehow scrambled back to smother the ball and keep Lavrusky from taking a shot.

Stanford played with increased aggression in the second half, and Chioma Ubogagu had a point-blank shot in the box in the 56th minute, but it went right to Rowland, who easily made the save. Courtney Verloo also had a shot in the 66th minute that Rowland ranged to her left to save.

Smith put the game away at 84:25 with a huge insurance goal. Mewis found Smith ahead, and the sophomore buried the shot far post for her seventh goal of the year, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.

"Hats off to both teams," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "It was such a high-level, good quality game to watch. I was definitely a little anxious at the end until we got the second goal. I could breathe a little bit and take a deep breath with less than five minutes to go. Taylor did an awesome job of finishing that. Hats off to Sam Mewis for her two assists today, and Kodi finished off a beautiful goal to start. Our goal-scoring has been pretty phenomenal with the quality of goals scored."

UCLA advances to face Regional No. 1 seed North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 5 pm ET. The Bruins will look to avenge their only loss of the year, a 1-0 loss on Sept. 6 at Duke.
