UCLA Earns 3-0 Shutout Win Over UC Irvine
By: UCLA Athletics
Los Angeles, Calif. -- Top-ranked UCLA posted its second-consecutive shutout victory this season, downing UC Irvine 3-0 on Sunday at Drake Stadium. The Bruins (2-0) again allowed zero shots on goal and have outshot their opponents 44-1 so far this season. UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland tied the school record with her 38th career shutout.

Midfielder Sam Mewis had a goal and an assist, and forwards Taylor Smith and Darian Jenkins each scored a goal for the Bruins.

Smith got UCLA going in the first half, taking a pass from Rosie White in the 29th minute, dribbling up the field and then firing a left-footed rocket top shelf from the top of the box for her first goal of the season. The Bruins had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute with another long-distance shot, this time by Lauren Kaskie, but her powerful shot hit the crossbar and bounced well out of danger.

UCLA broke the game open late in the second half. In the 78th minute, Sarah Killion sent a through ball into the box for Mewis. UC Irvine goalkeeper Jenn Randazzo challenged and got a hand on it, but Mewis kept after it and tapped the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.

Mewis played a pivotal role in the Bruins’ final goal in the 84th minute. Her header off a corner kick hit the crossbar and bounced straight down right to Jenkins, who one-timed it into the upper right corner for her first score of the 2014 campaign.

UCLA outshot UC Irvine (0-2), 22-1, with the Anteaters’ lone shot coming in the 87th minute to break UCLA’s 176 minute streak of not allowing a shot.

With no shots on goals allowed, Rowland had little to do in goal to earn career shutout No. 38, tying her with Valerie Henderson (2004-07) for the school record.

“The first half we were a little bit stagnant and slow, but in the second half we did a better job of being a little more creative,” said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. “It was tough, though, because they had a lot of numbers behind the ball, and the seams weren’t quite there that we’re used to seeing. It’s going to be good, though, to break down this video and really see some things we can do in training that can help us with these kinds of games where there are just so many numbers behind the ball.”

The Bruins will host No. 4 North Carolina on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7pm in a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Quarterfinals, which UCLA won in Chapel Hill in double overtime, 1-0. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
