Mewis, who was with the U.S. Under-23 squad in December, trained with the full team for a few days at the end of their January camp in Los Angeles and earned a spot on the team. She will be joining her older sister Kristie Mewis on the national team for the first time since the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
The call-up of both Mewis sisters marks the first time sisters have played together on the full U.S. Women’s National Team since identical twins Lorrie and Ronnie Fair played together in 1998.
Also named to the roster were UCLA alumnae and U.S. National Team mainstays Lauren Holiday and Sydney Leroux.
Mewis helped lead UCLA to its first-ever NCAA title in 2013, tying the school record for most assists in a NCAA Tournament with five. She also tied the school record for assists in a game with three versus USC this past season. Mewis is a three-time All-Pac-12 selection and ranked third on the team in scoring in 2013 with 21 points (6 goals, 9 assists).
The U.S. will play Canada on Jan. 31 at 8pm CT in Frisco, Texas (TV: FOX Sports 1) and Russia on Feb. 8 at 3:30pm ET in Boca Raton, Fla. (Internet: ussoccer.com) and again on Feb. 12 at 7:30pm ET in Atlanta, Ga. (Internet: ussoccer.com). Head coach Tom Sermanni will name 18 players to suit up for each of the matches.
