Mew's Views

Senior midfielder Sam Mewis is back for season two of Mew's Views. Mewis helped lead UCLA to its first-ever NCAA Championship in 2013 and is back for her senior season with the added arsenal of experience playing with the full U.S. Women's National Team under her belt. Mewis, a three-time all-conference player and a 2013 NSCAA Scholar All-West Region selection, has scored 49 points on 15 goals and 19 assists in her UCLA career.

Last Friday, we finished up fitness testing and week one of preseason. Congrats to Annie Alvarado for getting the best overall average between our two fitness tests! With that behind us - thankfully - we took Sunday off for some much-needed recovery. We got right back at it on Monday and Tuesday with two-a-days. Tuesday was also picture day, so we got a nice little reminder of what it was like to wear make-up again! We’ve worked hard at practice all week in an effort to best prepare ourselves for Friday’s scrimmage against Texas A&M.

Ice Bucket ChallengeWe had a special thing happening on Wednesday when we participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. My father pledged to donate money to the cause for every teammate that I recruited to do the challenge with me. On Wednesday, 10 of us dunked in the ice bath in the training room. We decided to challenge the UCLA Men’s Soccer Team and Coach Linn, our performance coach. Let’s see if they participate too!

It’s also time this week to introduce the eight freshmen!

First, we have Siri Ervik, a goalkeeper who came all the way to LA from Oslo, Norway. Siri has participated in several international matches with Norway’s Youth National Teams. She also speaks five languages and has traveled to 17 different countries. Even with all that experience, Siri doesn’t know what a s’more is. She has an older brother, and her favorite meal would be her mom’s chicken tikka masala.

Siri is preseason roommates with Reema Noor Bzeih, a defender from Irvine, California. Reema went to the World Cup in Brazil this past summer and watched the U.S. Men’s National Team play against Germany. She has three brothers, and her favorite meal would be a falafel sandwich with ice cream for dessert.

Reema played on the same club team as Chloe Hemingway, who is also from Irvine, California. Chloe must have some connections at UCLA because she already knows about Bruin Plate, the new dorm dining hall that all of us living off-campus are trying to get swiped into! Chloe is a defender and is looking forward to being surrounded by some of the top players in the country. She shares a love for Phish Food ice cream with our assistant coach, Louise Leiberman.

Chloe is rooming with goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman from Del Mar, California. Arielle’s older brother goes to school at Vanderbilt, and her favorite meal would be sushi and fro-yo (I’m thinking these girls will fit in perfectly with the rest of our fro-yo-loving team).

Gabrielle Matulich has already acquired the nickname “G” and comes from Los Gatos, California. She has been playing a bunch of different positions for us already, so it’ll have to be a surprise where she ends up! G is excited about becoming a better player at UCLA by being on the same field as other talented players; she is no stranger to talent, however, as she was just in Mexico playing with the U18 Women’s National Team.

G is rooming with MacKenzie Cerda from Fountain Valley, California. Mac has an older sister and two older twin brothers. She really likes sea animals, and ironically, also really likes sushi. Mac plays forward and excited about becoming a better player at UCLA.

Allie Dutto from Danville, California loves FC Barcelona. I had a couple of awesome conversations with her about our music interests when she recognized a poster on my wall of Matt and Kim (if you know me, you’ll know that this made me immediately like her).

Allie is rooming with Sam Kokoska, who may potentially pick up the nickname “Koko” due to sharing a name with both our Director of Operations, Sam Greene, and myself. Sam has a younger sister named Ryan and said that her parents wanted both of their children to have names that were gender-neutral. Sam is really excited about attending UCLA this fall and learning as much as she can. She says her mom makes really good ribs and sweet potato fries, and I would like to personally invite Mrs. Kokoska to make some for me anytime she wants!

That’s all for this week. Make sure to come out to our scrimmage at 5pm on Friday at the North Athletic Field on campus as we take on Texas A&M. Go Bruins!
