Mew's Views

Senior midfielder Sam Mewis is back for season two of Mew's Views. Mewis helped lead UCLA to its first-ever NCAA Championship in 2013 and is back for her senior season with the added arsenal of experience playing with the full U.S. Women's National Team under her belt. Mewis, a three-time all-conference player and a 2013 NSCAA Scholar All-West Region selection, has scored 49 points on 15 goals and 19 assists in her UCLA career.

This past week has absolutely flown by as we prepared for our first official game against Maryland tomorrow at Drake Stadium at 7pm. Last Thursday, the team went to a barbecue at Cassie Sternbach’s house in Calabassas and had a delicious dinner. A huge thank you goes out to the Sternbachs for having us over once again!

The evening was action-packed as Siri Ervik had her first S’mores experience (I had to teach her how to roast a marshmallow), and we had our own mini-concert experience courtesy of Gabbi Miranda and Alyssa Alarab. These two are so talented, and we could not get enough of their voices. Alyssa played guitar as the two girls sang songs like “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men and “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash.

Gabbi and AlyssaThey also sang “Hallelujah,” which brought forth a little bit of sadness due to some recent losses that various members of our team have experienced. I won’t go into personal details, but we were able to honor these individuals during our scrimmage on Friday by wearing tape around our wrists. My thoughts go out to everyone who has lost someone and I’m grateful that we were able to honor loved ones.

The scrimmage on Friday against Texas A&M went pretty well, and everyone was able to see some time on the field. We won the game 3-1 with goals from Megan Oyster, Kodi Lavrusky and myself. As a team, we realize that we have a lot to work on, but it was great to get out there against a quality opponent and try some things out. We were also able to hear the warm-up tape for the first time, which has been worked on tirelessly by our good friend Jarrett Lawson (Jarrett was also in charge of the giant face posters you may have seen at the scrimmage.)

Saturday we had a fun day at the beach with some regen, yoga and a little soccer tennis. Our head coach, Amanda, lives very close to the beach, so it was really convenient to park at her house and walk over. We headed back to her place after team lunch to watch Katelyn Rowland and the U20 US Women’s National Team play North Korea in the quarterfinals of the U20 Women’s World Cup. Unfortunately, the team lost in penalty kicks. We are so proud of Katelyn for making the team and for her tremendous performance throughout the tournament - though we are also grateful to have her back with us!

surfersSunday and Monday were back to business on the field, and we got a lot done in preparation for our official kick-off this weekend. We took Tuesday off and had the day to ourselves. I spent my day surfing, or, to put more accurately, swimming around and trying to surf. Tuesday was also Caprice Dydasco’s 21st Birthday, so a huge shout-out to our favorite little Hawaiian!

We spent yesterday and today watching film, practicing and preparing ourselves for tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to getting the first game started and also seeing my old club teammate that plays for Maryland who I have known for about 10 years. The weekend is bound to be exciting, so make sure you get down to Drake Stadium on Friday at 7pm for the game against Maryland and Sunday at 6pm for the game against UC Irvine. We’ll see you there! Go Bruins!
