UCLA Opens 2014 Season Friday Night vs. Maryland

The 2014 season begins Friday night for the defending NCAA champion UCLA women’s soccer team with a 7 pm match against Maryland at Marshall Field at Drake Stadium. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for youth. UCLA students are free with ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Ticketmaster or at the entrance.

Parking will be available for $12 at Lot 7 off Sunset Blvd. Short-term pay per space parking is also open at Lot 8 off Westwood Blvd.

The Bruins return 10 starters from their national championship team, including four players who have been named to the MAC Hermann Watch List – 2013 finalist Abby Dahlkemper, U.S. Women’s National Team member Sarah Killion, U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team starting goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, and 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Darian Jenkins. Also returning are U.S. Women’s National Team member and Soccer America Preseason All-American Sam Mewis, U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team members Caprice Dydasco and Taylor Smith, College Cup Defensive MVP Ally Courtnall, and the two players who teamed up for the championship-winning goal – Megan Oyster and Kodi Lavrusky.

Head coach Amanda Cromwell, the 2013 Soccer America Coach of the Year, brings in the nation’s No. 4 recruiting class, led by U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team captain Gabrielle Matulich. Back onto the pitch after sitting out last season with injuries are forward Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski, midfielder Taylor Alderete and defender Zoey Goralski.

Rowland is back in goal for UCLA after starting four games and earning two shutouts for the U.S. at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. The U.S. lost to North Korea in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks Aug. 16. Rowland had six saves in the game and stopped one penalty in the shootout. UCLA downed ninth-ranked Texas A&M, 3-1, in the exhibition opener a week ago. Twenty-eight Bruins saw playing time, including all eight true freshmen. Mewis had a goal an an assist, and Oyster and Lavrusky each scored a goal.

Maryland, which is coached by Jonathan Morgan, went 10-10 a year ago and finished eighth in the ACC. The Terrapins are starting their first season in the Big Ten. Maryland returns eight starters from a year ago, including goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands, who started all 20 matches and posted a 1.49 goals against average.

UCLA leads the all-time series with Maryland, 2-1. This is the teams’ first meeting since 2006. UCLA won that contest, 3-0, in Maryland.

The Bruins host UC Irvine on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 6pm at Drake Stadium. That game will also be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
