UCLA Women's Soccer Heads To Wake Forest Tournament

Sept. 7, 1999

LOS ANGELES - The Bruins (1-1-0) travel to North Carolina this week to participate in the Wake Forest Tournament. On Friday, September 10, the Bruins face UNC Charlotte (3-0-0) at 5 pm Eastern time. On Sunday, September 6, the Bruins go head-to-head with the host Demon Deacons (3-0-0) at 3 pm Eastern time.

UCLA vs. UNC Charlotte: UCLA owns a 1-0 series record against UNC Charlotte after having defeated the 49ers 1-0 at the 1998 USF diadora Classic. The 49ers return four starters and are led by sophomore Carrie Hughes and junior Meredith Mayo, who have both tallied 11 points (4g, 3a). Last year, UNC Charlotte claimed the Conference USA Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAAs, losing 0-6 to soccer powerhouse North Carolina.

UCLA vs. Wake Forest: Sunday's match against the Demon Deacons marks the first meeting between the two schools. No. 25 Wake Forest is led by senior forward Anne Shropshire, who has registered eight points (3g, 2a) in the Demon Deacons' three games this season. The Demon Deacons are currently outscoring opponents 10-1. They return eight starters from the 1998 squad, including 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year Emily Taggart. At the NCAA Tournament last year, Wake Forest took a first round exit, falling to Georgia, 2-5.

UCLA at the USC Fila Tournament: UCLA went 1-1 at the USC Fila Challenge this weekend. On Saturday, the defending national champion Florida Gators defeated the Bruins, 3-1. Florida took an early 2-0 lead in the first half and then went on to seal the victory. In the 49th minute, forward Abby Wambach notched her second goal of the game and fifth of the season to give the Gators a 3-0 advantage. UCLA avoided a shutout in the 83rd minute when freshman midfielder Tracey Winzen headed in sophomore defender Bethany Bogart's corner kick.

In UCLA's second game of the tournament, Winzen scored the game-winner in much the same fashion as Saturday's match when she headed in another Bogart corner kick. The 90th minute goal was the first of the game, and the Bruins secured a 1-0 victory. Both goalkeepers, senior Lindsay Culp (four saves) of UCLA and junior Riki-Ann Serrins of Maryland (five saves) made several outstanding stops, particularly in the final minutes when the action raised in intensity.

Freshmen Contribution: UCLA's recruiting class this season has proven to be one of the best in school history. The freshman have already made a huge impact for the Bruins, registering points in all three of UCLA's games this season. In addition, three of UCLA's six goals were scored by a freshman. Winzen notched two over Labor Day Weekend at the Fila Challenge, while forward Jessica Winton recorded her first collegiate goal against Cal State Fullerton on August 28.

Homeward Bound: The Bruins host their home-opener on Friday, Sept. 17 when they face UC Irvine for a 7:30 pm matchup at Spaulding Field on the UCLA campus. Action continues on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when UCLA hosts Cal Poly, SLO for a 7:30 pm game at Spaulding Field.
