Mew's Views

Junior midfielder Sam Mewis will be blogging for UCLABruins.com during the 2013 season. Mewis is a regular with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and a two-time all-conference selection who has scored 28 points on nine goals and 10 assists in her two-plus years as a Bruin.

This week kicked off our season with two victorious home games against Northeastern and Cal State Northridge. On Friday, we beat Northeastern, 4-0, thanks to goals from Gabbi Miranda, Rosie White, Darian Jenkins, and Jenna Richmond. On Sunday, we beat Northridge, 3-0, with goals from Jenna, Darian, and Taylor Smith. Katelyn Rowland and Alana Munger both did a great job in goal, keeping us scoreless with some help from the back line.

It was great to get off to such a strong start. We got a lot of substitutes into the game, which will be great for our depth down the line. Congrats to Amanda for her first pair of wins as a Bruin, and congrats to Darian and Gabbi for their first collegiate goals!

We had an eventful week off the field as well. Rosie’s parents were in town all the way from New Zealand, so Saturday we took them to the Dodgers vs. Red Sox baseball game. It was a lot of fun, and the Red Sox won - good news for me, being from Boston! The longer I live in LA, the more I realize just how much there is to do and see here. I also went to a comedy show in Hollywood this week with my boyfriend who was visiting from home, and it was very good. It got me thinking about who on our team would make the best stand-up comedian ... I think Abby Dahlkemper and Megan Oyster could pull off a hysterical duo if they could control their own laughter while onstage!

The other cool thing we did this week was go to Amoeba Music to look at records. I got a record player as an early birthday present and wanted to buy some vinyls. Caprice Dydasco, Megan, Kodi Lavrusky and I all went to have a look, and it was one of the coolest places I have seen in LA. They had thousands of records, and we spent so much time just looking through all of them. I ended up getting a bunch. One of my favorites so far is the Eagles Greatest Hits album. I’m really excited to keep adding to my collection, and I can tell that finding cool records is going to be a hobby of mine.

Now the team is heading off to Indiana to play Marquette on Friday and Notre Dame on Sunday. It’s going to be a long trip since we are going right to North Carolina for next weekend’s pair of games. The team won’t be back in LA for 12 days, forcing us all to stuff our suitcases full to the 50 lb. limit. Road trips are a great team bonding experience, so everyone is excited to spend a lot of time together as a team. In addition, we’ll get some great competition from other parts of the country at the same time. These four games in the next two weeks will really test us as a new team. I can’t wait to see how we perform and what kind of results we come away with.

A lot of families are coming to the games this weekend. With Megan from Chicago and Sarah Killion being from Fort Wayne, we are hoping to have a loud cheering section for both games! My parents are coming to our games as well, so I’m really looking forward to seeing them for the first time in a few months. The men’s team is at Indiana University this weekend too for games against IU and Notre Dame, so good luck to the boys!

Make sure to tune in or check for updates about our games Friday and Sunday this weekend. I’m sure there will be plenty to tell you next week about our travels and adventures on the road.

Go Bruins!
