Mew's Views - Another Task Ahead

Mew's Views

Junior midfielder Sam Mewis is blogging for UCLABruins.com during the 2013 season. Mewis is a regular with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and a two-time all-conference selection who has scored 34 points on 12 goals and 10 assists in her career.

With only one game this past weekend, we got straight to business against Arizona State on Friday and were able to beat them, 3-0. Ally Courtnall ran the show from beginning to end, not only getting a goal and an assist, but gracing all of us with her beautiful performance of the national anthem before the game. Courtney Proctor and Darian Jenkins chipped in with a goal each, and Jenna Richmond selflessly contributed two assists.

Friday’s game was also honored as our Breast Cancer awareness event. I can’t stress enough the personal importance of this game for me every year. Both my mother and aunt are breast cancer survivors, and each year I feel as though this is my opportunity to honor their bravery and strength. I’m very proud of both of these women and look to each of them often as examples of the kind of woman that I aspire to be. I feel very grateful to UCLA for continuing to support such an important cause every year.

We took a much-needed break over the weekend. It’s been a physically demanding few weeks, so the two days of rest were seen as a gift. A few of us started some art projects in place of studying on Saturday. I’m already thinking about Christmas presents that I want to make my friends and family! (A tad premature, I know.)

On Sunday, a good number of us woke up early to go help out at Dribble For the Cure, an event run by the UCLA basketball programs to support Pediatric Cancer research. We were working at the t-shirt-making station, having just as much fun as the kids. It felt really good to get out and do something positive for the community, and getting to see the kids participate was very rewarding.

Later in the day, Belden Long and I went to our first book club meeting that we just founded with UCLA men’s volleyball player Steve O’Dell. We had all decided to read Albert Camus’ The Fall and had a very enlightening discussion about the themes of the book. It was awesome to get different perspectives on such an interesting novel, and I’m really looking forward to our next meeting!

I'm starting to think that collaborating with others on familiar ideas is just as important as being exposed to new ones. Somehow, Belden convinced me to go to hot yoga with her and Cassie Sternbach. Yoga isn’t exactly my idea of fun, but I gave in and went anyways. I expected it to be a lot worse than it was. Cassie and Belden were both considerably better than me, but then again, yoga is all about your own individual practice, right? Needless to say, I sweat an impressive amount and made it through the class. I don’t know when I’ll be going back, but it was definitely a cool experience!

Monday’s practice threw us right back into soccer with a competition day. On competition day, there is a series of small sided games in which your individual record of wins, losses, and goals scored is documented. The teams change every game, and the objective is to determine who most contributes to winning. I had a blast playing 2v2 with 6 or 7 different teammates. While it was very competitive at times, that’s the way it should be. Our competitiveness shines through so much against one another, but I wouldn’t want to mess with some of my teammates if I were on another team! I think that Monday’s practice was very beneficial for us to see how tough everyone is and to reestablish that we should be glad we’re all in this together when it really counts.

concertIt was also quite the musical week for me as I got to see both Walk the Moon and Jack Johnson perform live! Kylie, Rosie and I went to Walk the Moon with a few other friends for a very lively and exciting show last week in Santa Ana. Rosie and I attended at a much more relaxed and classic Jack Johnson concert at the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA. Seeing live music always makes me so happy, so I felt so fortunate to get two opportunities in such close succession!

We want to wish Rosie White good luck as she travels to San Francisco to play with the New Zealand national team against the USA national team. She will play against UCLA alumnae Sydney Leroux and Lauren Holiday, and also against my sister, Kristie, who is attending camp with the national team this week too!t was also quite the musical week for me as I got to see both Walk the Moon and Jack Johnson perform live! I also want to recognize Zoey Goralski, as she is finally being integrated into some of practice after tearing her ACL earlier in the spring. It’s such a long recovery, but Zoey has been working so hard to get back into form, and it’s great to have her on the field with us!

Our busy schedule resumes as we travel to both Utah and Colorado this weekend for Friday/Sunday games against the two Pac-12 opponents. With only five regular season games left, it’s really important that we get both victories this weekend. The better our record is during the season, the more likely we will get seeded to play home games during tournament. Make sure to catch both games this weekend, and we'll see you back at home next week. Go Bruins!
