No. 3 UCLA to Visit No. 5 UC Irvine Thursday

Third-ranked UCLA travels south to meet No. 5 UC Irvine on Thursday in a key regional women’s water polo game at 7 p.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Center.

The Bruins (11-1) have won 18 consecutive games against the Anteaters (9-3) in the series, including two last season.

The Bruins won their first 11 games this season before suffering a tough 8-4 setback to No. 2 Stanford in the championship of the Stanford Invitational on Jan. 26. UCLA has scored 163 goals through 12 games for a 13.5 average. Defensively, the Bruins are allowing 5.4 goals per game and making an average of 10.2 saves per game.

Individually, junior attacker Emily Donohoe leads the Bruins in scoring with 23 goals (1.9 gpg), followed by senior utility Becca Dorst with 21 goals (1.7 gpg). Sophomore Alys Williams ranks third on the team with 17 goals, followed by Rachel Fattal (15), Danielle Ferraro (14) and Kodi Hill and Mackenzie Barr with 11 each.

In goal, All-American Sami Hill boasts a goals against average of 4.76 with 94 saves (9.7 saves per game).

The Anteaters will counter with seniors Jessica Cardey (187 career goals) and Hannah Croghan (136) and junior Danielle Warde (116). In the Bruins’ 7-6 victory last season at UCI, Croghan scored three goals.

Earlier this season, sixth-ranked UCI defeated Arizona State, ranked No. 5 at the time, 9-6.
