Junior Emily Donohoe and sophomore Rachel Fattal accounted for eight goals, and No.2 UCLA used a pair of 4-0 scoring spurts in each half to outlast No. 4 California, 11-8, in MPSF women’s water polo action Thursday in Berkeley.

After the Bears took a two-goal lead in the first quarter, the Bruins scored four unanswered goals to move ahead 5-3 early in the second quarter. The Bruins led 6-4 at halftime before scoring four of the next five goals for a 10-5 advantage early in the fourth period. Those spurts enabled UCLA to improve to 19-2 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play. Cal fell to 16-4, 2-2.

In the fourth quarter, the Bruins withstood a scary Cal rally. The Bears’ Roser Terrago and Michelle Caron scored three goals in two minutes to flip a five-goal UCLA lead into a precarious 10-8 margin for the visitors. But at 1:21, Donohoe took advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity and scored her fourth goal of the game to provide an insurmountable three-goal cushion. Junior goalkeeper Sami Hill made a pair of key saves in the final 90 seconds to preserve the victory.

After Cal’s Anna Illes scored the first goal of the third period to make it 6-5, UCLA put together its second four-goal string to make it 10-5 early in the fourth period.

In the second quarter the Bruins scored three goals to take a 5-3 lead and extend a scoring streak of four unanswered goals. India Forster tied the game at 3-3 on a backhanded two-meter shot at 7:02, followed by Fattal counterattack goal from the near side at 6:32 to give the Bruins a 4-3 lead. A minute later, Donohoe scored from the front court to increase the Bruins’ lead to 5-3. Cal broke the scoring string with a goal at 4:10 to make it 6-4. With 1:28 remaining until the break, Kodi Hill scored from the near side for a 6-4 UCLA halftime lead.

In the first quarter, Cal took a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals by freshman Dora Antal and one by Kelly McKee 23 seconds into the game. Antal scored the Bears’ second goal on a penalty at 5:07 and their third at 3:42 from five meters. The Bruins scored on a counterattack from Fattal at 5:24 to tie the game at 1-1, and Kelly Ronimus scored on a power play at 2:24 to narrow the Bears’ lead to 3-2.

UCLA travels to Hawaii tonight for a 6 p.m. (HT) game against the Rainbow Wahine on Sat., Mar. 29.
