With the clocking ticking in the final half minute and UC Irvine running its offense, Hill made a steal to lift the Bruins to a key one-point victory in an important regional match-up on the road.
The victory was the Bruins’ (12-1) 19th straight in the series against the Anteaters (9-4).
UCLA freshman Mackenzie Barr scored the game-winner with 1:36 remaining to cap a three-goal fourth period that enabled the Bruins to overcome a 4-3 deficit entering the final quarter. Hill scored at 6:35 to tie the score at 4. But the Anteaters’ Jessy Cardey answered with her second goal of the night to give the hosts a 5-4 lead. UCLA All-American Rachel Fattal countered with a goal at 4:03 to tie the score at 5 before Barr’s winner hit the net a few minutes later.
UCI’s Hillary Estrada put the hosts in front first with an extraman goal at 6:39 in the opening period. UCLA junior Emily Donohoe equalized at 4:07.
After a goal by Barr at 6:40 in the second quarter, the ‘Eaters responded twice on goals by Cardey and Hannah Croghan to take a 3-2 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bruins tied the score on a goal by Donohoe at 5:34 before the ‘Eaters reestablished the lead on a goal by Mckenna Mitchell.
