No. 1 UCLA Women's Water Polo Defeats Cal State Bakersfield, 14-8

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked UCLA women’s water polo team defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 14-8, in an MPSF contest Saturday afternoon at Hillman Aquatics Center.

The Bruins (21-2, 3-0 MPSF) opened a 10-0 lead midway through the third quarter and never saw its cushion reduced to fewer than six goals in the conference road victory.

Kelly Ronimus led UCLA with three goals against the host Roadrunners (12-18, 0-4 MPSF), while Kodi Hill, Rachel Fattal and Alexa Tielmann each scored a pair of goals for the Bruins. In all, UCLA received goals from each of nine players in the win.

UCLA stormed to a 5-0 lead in the opening quarter, as five players each netted one goal in the final five minutes of the first frame. Mackenzie Barr opened the scoring for the Bruins with a goal at the 4:23 mark. Hill followed with a goal at the 3:04 mark, doubling UCLA’s margin. India Forster’s goal at 2:42 gave the Bruins a 3-0 cushion.

Ronimus scored her first of three goals with 1:15 left in the first quarter, and Tielmann followed with a goal with just 32 seconds left to put UCLA ahead, 5-0.

The Bruins followed with three goals in the second quarter to secure an 8-0 advantage by halftime.

UCLA continued its offensive success early in the third quarter. Ronimus found the back of the cage just 45 seconds into the second half and Fattal netted her first of two third-quarter scores with 6:45 to play in the quarter.

Cal State Bakersfield scored its first goal of the afternoon with 6:27 to play in the third period on a strike from Bridgette Souza. Fattal quickly answered with her second goal of the day at the 5:01 mark, putting UCLA ahead by an 11-1 margin.

UCLA led Cal State Bakersfield, 13-3, after three quarters. The Roadrunners outscored UCLA in the final quarter, 5-1.

Souza and Niki De Leon each finished with two goals for Cal State Bakersfield.

Sami Hill totaled six saves in the cage for UCLA. Hill limited the Roadrunners to four goals in the first three quarters and two minutes in the final frame. UCLA’s Alex Musselman allowed four goals in the game’s final six minutes.

Cal State Bakersfield goalkeeper Courtney Wahlstrom finished with 14 saves.

UCLA returns to action at home versus Stanford on Friday, April 11. Game time between the nation’s co-No. 1-ranked teams next Friday is 1:30 p.m. (PT). Friday’s MPSF contest will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
