The Bruins (24-3) started hot and kept the Roadrunners (12-21) off the scoreboard for most of the first period and all of the second in building an 8-1 halftime lead. UCLA goalkeeper Sami Hill made a pair of big blocks in the first period to keep CS Bakersfield from tying the score, while her teammates established the offensive tempo and pulled away.
Sophomore Alys Williams made an early first quarter steal, and the Bruins capitalized with a goal from sophomore Kodi Hill to assume a 1-0 lead. Later on, Fattal found senior Becca Dorst in the hole and she drew a penalty, which Fattal made to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. With less than five minutes to play, Ferraro found sophomore Charlotte Pratt open, and Pratt scored her sixth goal of the season for a three-goal Bruins’ advantage. CSUB scored its first goal soon afterward to cut the lead to two. In the final two minutes, Sami Hill stopped a pair of CSUB shots, and the Bruins ended the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.
The Bruins’ offense took over in the second quarter, scoring five goals and the defense shut down the Roadrunners, limiting them to no goals. Ferraro and Kodi Hill scored twice in the second quarter, and senior Victoria Kent scored once. With a seven-goal lead at halftime, the Bruins were able play their backup goalkeeper Alex Musselman in the second half.
In the third quarter, Kodi Hill assisted on the Bruins’ first two goals to Fattal and Williams as the score increased to 10-1. Pratt scored her second goal to make it 12-1 before the Roadrunners scored their second goal on a penalty shot. At the end of the third quarter the Bruins led 11-2.
The Bruins’ only goal in the fourth quarter came when Musselman found Ferraro on a counterattack and Ferraro scored her third goal of the game. The Roadrunners scored their last goal on a penalty for the final 12-3 margin.
UCLA advances to the semifinals and will play Arizona State at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
