PASADENA, Calif. – The UCLA women’s cross country team downed rival USC, 25-36, while the men competed in a non-scoring race Friday morning at the Brookside Golf Course near the Rose Bowl.
After the Trojans took the first two individual places in the women’s race, UCLA clinched the victory by claiming the next 12 spots.
Junior Sierra Vega took third with a time of 21:57.03 in the 6K event. Junior Paisley Pettway followed with a 22:19.16 and was joined by Rachel Brajkovich (22:24.11), sophomore Jen Owen (22:31.92) and senior Kristina Rivera (22:34.43). Rounding out the top seven for the Bruins was freshman Aliya Shirif (22:36.5) and sophomore Kelly Brooks (22:42.06).
Also competing for the Bruins was freshman Nicole Evans (13th, 22:56.45), junior Ava Kent (14th, 23:06.62), senior Amber Murakami (15th, 23:12.10), senior Caitlin Schmitt (16th, 23:33.78), junior Merissa Kado (17th, 24:05.66), sophomore Lyndsey Mull (21st, 24:51.48) and freshman Sadia Ibrahim (27th, 25:55.14).
Running unattached for UCLA were freshmen Emily Scharmann (9th, 22:34.97) and Sabrina Seay (11th, 22:37.57).
On the men’s side only four runners suited up for the Bruins. Junior Chase Zukerman finished fifth with a 25:00.73 in the 8K event. Sophomore Nathaniel Cushing-Murray was eighth with a time of 25:12.15, closely followed by freshman Austin O’Neil in ninth place with a 25:21.97. Freshman Nolan Dickson placed 11th with a 25:34.12.
Running unattached for UCLA was Daniel De La Torre, who won the race in 24:22.68. Myles Smith followed in second with a 24:46.36. Richard Ho was fourth with a 24:53.44 while Max Davis finished 10th in 25:26.20.
The alumni also competed in the men’s race where senior Alec Govi, who has eligibility left in track, ran a 25:54.39 and finished 15th overall. The team held a banquet after the event and celebrated the teams from the 80s.
The Bruins will be tested next weekend as they head to the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison. The event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 19.
