MADISON, Wisc. – The UCLA men’s and women’s cross country teams went up against the best talent in the country, Saturday morning at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational held on the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course. Both the Bruins men’s and women’s squad finished 27th in their respective races.
"I was very pleased with the toughness of our top runners today,” coach Forest Braden said. “We have a very fit, talented squad that just didn't race like it today. Everyone is ready to get back to work and prove that we can still roll with the best in the Pac-12 and the NCAA."
In the women’s 6K event, junior Kelsey Smith once again paced the Bruins. Smith finished 35th with a time of 20:27. Junior Annie Mooney placed 51st with a 20:40 while junior Meghan Marvin finished 163rd with a 21:36.
Junior Annabel Clarke placed 202nd with a 21:56 and was closely followed by junior Bronte Golick (208th, 22:01. Rounding out the Bruin top seven was freshman Paige Tennison (212th, 22:03) and junior Elle Sanders (231st, 22:24).
“Kelsey Smith and Annie Mooney really put themselves out there and had great days,” Braden said. “We need the rest of the women to step up and close the gap from 2-5.”
Also competing for UCLA was sophomore Ashlee Powers (263rd, 22:41) and junior Paisley Pettway (279th, 23:08).
On the men’s side sophomore Nick Hartle powered through the 10K with a 23:59 to finish 47th overall. Sophomore Sergey Sushchickh posted a 24:30 to finish 122nd. Junior Daniel Herrera finished 123rd with an identical 24:30.
“Nick Hartle ran one of the gutsiest races of any UCLA cross country athlete since I've been here,” Braden added. “He had no business going with the leaders in that race but he did anyways and showed his mental toughness. He will continue to get better as the season progresses and I see him continuing to lead this team in the coming races. I was disappointed with the toughness of the rest of the men's squad.”
Freshman Ferdinand Edman placed 151st with a 24:39 and senior Patrick Douglas placed 164th with a 24:43. Senior Zack Torres placed 203rd with a 25:06 while freshman Michael McCabe was 217th with a 25:28.
UCLA will return to the trail when it competes in the Titan Invitational. The event is slated for Friday, Oct. 25, and will be held on the Fullerton campus.
