No. 6 UCLA Sand Volleyball Returns to Action on the Road This Week

LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins (3-1) return to action this week at the USF Invitational on Thursday, March 27 for a pair of matches against No. 3 Hawai'i (7-2) at 9:00 a.m. and at San Francisco (1-0) at 3:00 p.m. The event will take place at the home court of USF sand volleyball, Piper Park Courts, in Larkspur, Calif.

Third-ranked Hawai'i enters tomorrow's match at 7-2, with both defeats coming at the hands of higher ranked teams. The Rainbow Wahine's first loss came against top-ranked Pepperdine at the USAV Collegiate Sand Tournament on March 15. Hawai'i also fell to No. 2 USC on March 19. Hawai'i rebounded to post a 5-0 win over Nebraska on March 20.

The Dons enter the Invitational at 1-0 after defeating California, 3-2, on March 21 in their season opener, tallying wins at the No. 1, 3, and 5 positions. The top tandem of Sara Staengle and Valentina Zaloznik, pairing up for the second straight season, took a straight-set win, as did the No. 3 duo of Katarina Pilepic and Courtney Sabahi. It took a decisive third set for Emily Reed and Inbar Vinarsky to finish off their opponent, coming from behind to prevail, 16-21, 21-19, 15-13. Thursday's Schedule at USF (March 27):

University of San Francisco Invitational
9 a.m. – No. 6 UCLA vs. No. 3 Hawai'i
12 p.m. – No. 3 Hawai'i at USF
3 p.m. – No. 6 UCLA at USF

After the USF Invitational, the Bruins will head to Stanford for three matches on Saturday, March 29. The Bruins will open with a match against Santa Clara (2-1) at 9:00 a.m. on Stanford's campus at Arguello Park, located north of Wilbur Hall. The Bruins will then face No. 3 Hawai'i for the second time in three days at Noon at Arguello Park. UCLA will end the day with the hosts, Stanford (0-3), at the ACSR Sand Volleyball Courts, located between Taube South and the Graduate School of Business.

Sunday’s competition (March 30) will be a pairs tournament played on all four courts starting at 8 a.m. PT. Admission and parking is free. Competition will happen rain or shine. Fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets for seating.

3 p.m. – Stanford vs. UCLA

Wilbur Courts 3&4
9 a.m. – UCLA vs. Santa Clara

3 p.m. – Hawaii vs. Santa Clara

The Bruins, under second year head coach Stein Metzger and assistants Jenny Johnson Jordan and Sarah Straton, are 6-8 overall in dual matches after going 3-7 last season. UCLA had a pair of teams reach the 2013 AVCA National Championships, Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves, as well as Nightingale and Becca Strehlow. Reeves became the first Bruin to earn AVCA All-America honors last year.
