LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked Bruins dropped their first match of the year, falling 5-0 to fourth-ranked Florida State on Friday night under the lights at USC's Merle Norman Stadium. UCLA droped to 3-1 on the year while FSU improved to 7-1.

The #4 and #5 pairs had the first wave of action, as the #5 doubles team of freshmen Skylar Dykstra and Jennie Frager dropped a straight-set match, 21-18, 21-12, to the Seminoles' Kayla Joyce and Hailey Luke. Frager hit an incredible .714 (10K, 0E, 14TA) and added nine digs, one ace and one block. Dykstra just missed a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. But Luke had a match-high 15 kills and the FSU duo recorded 11 aces, to one for the Bruins.

At No. 4 doubles, the Bruins saw the return of junior Karsta Lowe as she was paired with sophomore Taylor Formico. The FSU tandem of Katie Mosher and Sarah Wickstrom won in straight sets, 25-23 and 21-12. Lowe was solid in her first action of the 2014 sand season with 14 kills and one block. Formico added five digs and six kills for UCLA. Mosher had a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs for FSU.

Bruin sophomores Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye dropped their first match of the year (3-1) with a straight set defeat at No. 3 doubles to Kristina and Stephanie Pellitteri, 21-16, 21-7. Inouye finished with nine kills and seven digs while Drolson registered six kills and 13 digs. Stephanie Pellitteri led FSU with a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs. FSU's win at #3 clinched the team win for the Noles.

Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels held off the Bruins' junior Zoë Nightingale and senior Madie Smith, 20-22, 21-15, 15-9. Pavels led FSU with a double-double of 26 kills and 20 digs. Smith posted a double-double of her own with 22 kills and 19 digs. Nightingale added nine kills, three digs, three blocks and an ace for UCLA.

Aurora Davis and Jace Pardon withstood a Bruin comeback by sophomore Kamila Tan and freshman Jessyka Ngauamo at #1 doubles to win 21-16, 20-22, 15-9. Davis' double-double of 24 kills and 14 digs led the Seminoles. Tan contributed 23 kills, seven digs and an ace for UCLA while her partner, Ngauamo, tallied 11 kills, nine digs and two aces.

The Bruins will be off the next two weeks for finals and spring break and return to face Hawai'i in Piper Park in Larkspur, Calif., on Thursday, Mar. 27 at 9:00 a.m. The Bruins will also square off with San Francisco at 3:00 p.m.
