The UCLA men’s volleyball team split four exhibition matches Friday during opening round competition at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
In the morning matches, UCLA lost 2-0 to IPFW (29-31, 23-25), but beat UC San Diego 2-0 (25-19, 25-21). Against the Mastadons, senior Gonzalo Quiroga recorded 13 kills and an ace, followed by five kills and an ace from freshman Jackson Bantle. In the victory against UC San Diego, freshman Mitch Stahl hit .600 with a line of 10-1-15, and senior Robart Page added seven kills in 12 swings.
In the afternoon UCLA defeated CS Northridge 2-1 (23-25, 25-21, 15-8), but dropped a 2-0 decision to Long Beach State (19-25, 18-25). In the victory against the Matadors, Page led the Bruins with nine kills and two total blocks, followed by eight from Stahl. Against Long Beach State, Page was the Bruins' kill leader with 11, and freshman Michael Fisher added five.
UCLA will play Stanford on Saturday in the seventh place match. The match will be the regular season opener for both teams.
