Sets scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 in favor of Stanford, which improved to 1-0. The Bruins fell to 0-1 prior to their trip this week to the Outrigger Hotels Invitational (Jan. 9-11) in Hawai’i.
Following an impressive first set in which the Bruins hit .440, Stanford rallied with a balanced offense to take the next three sets. Four Stanford players, led by Brian Cook’s 16 kills, recorded double-digit kills and each of them hit better than .350 for the match.
Senior Gonzalo Quiroga led the Bruins with 14 kills (.333), and added two aces and a pair of block assists. Freshman Mitch Stahl slammed 12 kills, served an ace and added four block assists. Senior Spencer Rowe had eight kills and three block assists and senior Robart Page contributed seven kills, an ace and one block assist. John Zappia came off the bench and recorded six kills.
Sophomore setter Steve O’Dell recorded 44 set assists, three aces and five digs, and freshman libero Hagen Smith dug six balls.
After the Outrigger even, the Bruins’ next home match will be Fri., Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. vs. Stanford in Pauley Pavilion. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
