Bruins Fall in Four to Long Beach State

LOS ANGELES - No. 2 UCLA was upset by No. 6 Long Beach State, 3-1 (16-25, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25), on Wednesday evening in Pauley Pavilion. Gonzalo Quiroga led the Bruins with a season-high 20 kills and 10 digs. Robart Page added 18 kills and eight digs for UCLA, who drops to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the MPSF. .

Long Beach State (7-3, 6-3 in the MPSF) was led by Taylor Crabb’s double-double of 29 kills and 16 digs. Dalton Ammerman was the only other 49er to reach double digit kills with 13.

The 49ers outblocked the Bruins 13.5 to 11.5 and outhit UCLA .286 to .255. UCLA outdug Long Beach 57-54 as both teams registered three aces.

Long Beach State jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the match, scoring four straight off Connor Olbright’s serve, and built the advantage to 11-5 before the Bruins called time out. The 49ers expanded the lead to 16-8, and the Bruins never got closer than six points (22-16). A kill by Taylor Crabb, his seventh of the set, gave Long Beach State the first set, 25-16. The 49ers hit 40% for the set, while the Bruins hit just 19%.

The 49ers maintained control of the match in the second set, hitting 36.8% to UCLA’s 26.5%. Long Beach State grabbed a 10-6 lead on UCLA before the Bruins cut the advantage to 14-12 after a block by Page and Spencer Rowe. A service error brought UCLA to within two, 15-13, but the 49ers pushed their lead to five 19-14 and 22-17. UCLA saved two set points to close to 24-20, but the 49ers closed it out with a kill by Ammerman to win the second set, 25-20.   

Long Beach State reeled off four straight points to take a 12-7 lead in set 3 before UCLA scored five of the next six points to pull to within 13-12. Quiroga had two kills and a service ace during that run. The Bruins tied it at 17-17 after a block by Rowe and took an 18-17 lead after a kill by Hagen Smith. Long Beach State regained the lead at 22-21 after an ace by Olbright, but a kill by Quiroga tied it again at 22-22, and a block by Smith and Trent Kersten put UCLA up 23-22. A kill by Page gave UCLA set point, and an attack error by the 49ers after a hard serve by Jackson Bantle kept the Bruins in the match, winning Set 3, 25-22. The Bruins hit 42.3% in the set, while the 49ers hit just 11.4%.

UCLA started out strong in set 4, scoring the first five points on a Rowe kill, two consecutive Quiroga aces and kills by Quiroga and Rowe. The Bruins extended their lead to 7-2 before the 49ers scored four of the next five points to close to 8-6. Long Beach State closed to within one, 12-11, but served into the net with a chance to tie. UCLA grew its lead to 17-13 and then 21-17 after another Quiroga kill, but the 49ers scored four-straight points to tie the set at 21-21. A monster kill by Rowe put UCLA ahead 22-21, but Long Beach State scored the next three points to get to match point. Quiroga saved one match point with a kill, but a dink by Crabb gave the match to the 49ers.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, Feb. 14 when they host Cal State Northridge in Pauley Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
