March 9, 2002
On Saturday, March 9, the No. 1 UCLA Men's Volleyball team hosted more than 3,000 children as part of UCLA's "I'm Going to College" Program. A mixture of elementary, middle, and high school students enjoyed various pre-game activities such as academic overviews, face-painting, campus tours, student athlete autographs, and a special visit from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Following these events, the children filled Pauley Pavilion to cheer on the Bruins and watch as UCLA defeated No. 7 Stanford in three games.
UCLA students and athletes combined their efforts to make this event a huge success. Several participants expressed their enthusiasm for the "I'm Going to College" Program, including Mr. Mackey from Ben Franklin Elementary School: "This event really boosts the kids' hopes for the future. At the end of the day, all the children believe they can go to college."
UCLA Athletics offers the "I'm Going to College" Program at various athletic events throughout the year. Operating through the Southern California school systems, the program touches thousands of students each year. Participants receive a glimpse of college life and the excitement of Division I Athletics.
Debra Schneider, director of the "I'm Going to College" Program, and her staff continue to make this amazing program available to children year after year. After Saturday's event, Schneider commented, "It is a great opportunity for these children to get a chance to learn about the wonderful things that college has to offer, both academically and athletically. I hope that the students enjoyed their time at UCLA and look forward to having these children, and many others, back for future events."
The remaining "I'm Going to College" event for the 2001-2002 school year is May 4, 2002 - Men's and Women's Track & Field vs. USC.
