UCLA raised its record to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play with a pair of sweeps against Long Beach State and UC San Diego last week.
Against the 49ers, four Bruins recorded double-digit kill totals and the team hit at a .376 clip to hand The Beach its sixth defeat in nine matches. Sophomore quick hitter Chris Pe?a led UCLA with 14 kills (.423), followed by senior outside hitter Matt Komer's 12 kills (.476) and season high of four aces. Junior opposite Cameron Mount added 10 kills (.474), nine digs and six blocks.
The Bruins beat the Tritons by limiting them to an attack percentage of .161 and by out-blocking them, 10.5-6.5. UCLA hit .383, led by Pe?a's 12 kills (.647), Komer's dozen kills (.375) and nine kills (.353) from freshman outside hitter Jonathan Acosta.
"[Against UCSD] Pe?a was getting up quick and hitting well against UCSD," said Head Coach Al Scates. "[Freshman Paul] Johnson came in and hit the ball well. Russell stuffed the ball and served nicely also."
Johnson entered the match in place of Morrow, who has a hand injury, and smacked three kills in four attempts and blocked four balls. Russell had three kills, three block assists and served an ace.
