Men's Spikers Win Calgary Tournament

The UCLA men's volleyball team won the 15th Annual Husky Dino Cup, hosted by the University of Calgary over the weekend at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Bruins defeated the Dinos, 3-1, in the championship match, avenging an earlier 3-0 loss to the hosts.

Before 1,696, UCLA won, 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22.

Sophomore Chris Pena earned Most Valuable Player honors for the Bruins while freshman Jonathan Acosta and Rich Nelson earned all-tournament honors.

In the first match of the tournament, the Dinos handed the Bruins a sobering 3-0 defeat. In that match, Calgary limited the Bruins to a .175 hitting percentage and out-blocked them 12.5-7. Only Pena, who hit .571 (8-0-14, 3blks) was consistently effective for UCLA.

But the Bruins rebounded to sweep Stanford, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 in a late match on Saturday. They held the Cardinal to a hitting percentage of .141 while hammering away at a .356 clip. Senior Matt Komer led the Bruins with 15 kills (.571), and Pena, junior Scott Morrow and Acosta each added six kills apiece. At the net the Bruins out-blocked the Cardinal 9.5-4.

In Sunday's early match, the Bruins edged Trinity Western University, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11. In this match, Acosta pounded a team-high of 17 kills (.379), followed by Pena's 12 (.346) and 10 from Komer. Sophomore Adam Shrader added a team-high of 12 digs.

The Bruins will host Team Canada on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. in the John Wooden Center in their final match of the pre-season.
