Walt Ker begins his second season as the Bruins' Volunteer Assistant Coach after serving in the same capacity during UCLA's championship run in 2006.
Ker has extensive experience coaching volleyball in the Southland. He started the men's program at Cal State Northridge in 1976 and coached the CSUN men until 1984. During that time, he also began coaching the CSUN women's team, and guided the Matadors to three NCAA Division II championships in 15 years. Five times during his reign the CSUN women were the NCAA runnerup.
A veteran club coach as well, Ker has guided four teams to national championships, including three on which his son Tony played. Ker also coached his son Kevin to a national title in 2004. Tony has started three seasons and Kevin is competing for a starting job at setter. Youngest son Jamey signed a National Letter of Intent to UCLA in November.
For the past 15 years, Ker has worked as a mortgage broker in the Santa Clarita Valley. He and his wife Cathy have been married 23 years.
