Cantlay to Receive McCormack Medal

UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay will receive the 2011 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the world's top ranked amateur player, the Royal & Ancient said this week. Cantlay cemented his place at the top of the rankings by finishing as the runner-up to Kelly Kraft at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Sunday. The presentation will take place Sept. 10-11 at the Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.

Quiroga Leads Argentina to Fifth Place Finish

UCLA sophomore Gonzalo Quiroga led Argentina to a fifth place finish at the Youth World Championship Sunday in Buenos Aires. Argentina defeated Bulgaria 25-20, 25-11, 25-19 in the fifth place match and Quiroga led both teams with 16 kills. For the tournament, he led all players with 138 kills, including a match-high 27 kills in a victory against the United States in the opening round.

Sneak Peek At Rose Bowl Video Board and Scoreboard

This past Friday, the UCLA football team held a closed scrimmage at the Rose Bowl. In addition to getting some important work accomplished, the players and coaches had a chance to see some of the changes at the Rose Bowl.

One of the key items in Phase I of the Rose Bowl Renovation is the installation of a new state-of-the-art LED video board which is more than twice as large (78 feet wide by 30 feet high) as the previous board at the Rose Bowl. It is located at the north end of the stadium.

The video board was operational for the Soccer Gold Cup in June and will make its football debut on September 10 when the Bruins host San Jose State in the 2011 home opener at 7 pm.

In addition, the Rose Bowl also has a new scoreboard on the south end of the bowl. It has a nostalgic design, recalling a bygone era of the stadium's history. It will also make its debut on Sept. 10.













Patrick Cantlay Receives Sponsors Exemption to Frys.com Open

UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, the world's No.1 ranked amateur golfer, received a sponsors exemption this week for the Frys.com Open, Oct. 3-9 at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, CA. Cantlay is quite familiar with the course, having won his first collegiate tournament there in November 2010. This week, he is playing in the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship at Erin Hills.

Quiroga Leads Argentina Past USA

UCLA sophomore outside hitter Gonzalo Quiroga led Argentina past the United States Sunday in the final match of Pool A competition at the FIVB Boys' Youth World Championship in Buenos Aires.

Argentina won 25-20, 25-19, 28-26. The loss dropped the USA (1-2) into the consolation bracket. Argentina (2-1) advanced to the medal round along with Bulgaria (2-1), also from Pool A.

Quiroga led all players in the sweep with 27 kills, including 23 kills in the final two sets. It was the most kills by an opponent against the USA in the team's three pool-play matches at the World Championship.

Patrick Cantlay Featured In UCLA Magazine

The latest issue of UCLA Magazine has a nice feature on men's golf freshman (now sophomore) sensation Patrick Cantlay.

This past June and July following a freshman year in which he earned the Jack Nicklaus Award as NCAA Player of the Year, Cantlay played in four PGA events and placed in the Top 25 in all four, including tying for 21st in the U.S. Open. He was also named to the U.S. Walker Cup team.

UCLA Receives U.S. Olympic Achievement Award

The U.S. Olympic Committee, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and the U.S. National Governing Bodies, have presented the U.S. Olympic Achievement Award to UCLA as of August, 2011. 

This award is given to institutions whose student/athletes and coaches won medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games or 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. 

UCLA was recognized as one of a total of 41 schools in the nation. The ribbon for the medal was designed by Al Oerter, a four-time Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time NCAA Champion for the University of Kansas. The large scale medallion award is a presentation piece showcased as a memory of UCLA's contribution to Olympic success.

The medal (in box on the right of photo) is now in UCLA's Olympic Games display in the Athletics Hall of Fame. located on the first floor of the J.D. Morgan Center.

USA Men's Volleyball Team Falls to Thailand

In a battle to reach the medal round, the USA Men's Volleyball Team fell in four sets to Thailand at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China on Wednesday.

The U.S. lost 15-25, 25-23, 19-25, 23-25 and will now play on Friday against Japan for 9th-16th place. The Stars and Stripes completed pool play with a 3-2 record, while Thailand advanced by winning four out of five matches.

Thailand scored 35 points off U.S. errors while committing 18. The teams were even in attacks (49-49) with the U.S. holding the edge in blocks (8-5) and Thailand winning at the service line (9-7).
 

UCLA middle blocker Thomas Amberg scored nine points on five kills, three blocks and an ace. His UCLA teammate Weston Dunlap totaled six points on four kills, a block and an ace.

USA Men's Volleyball Team Sweeps UAE

The USA Men's Volleyball Team, with the help of UCLA middle blocker Thomas Amberg, swept the United Arab Emirates Tuesday at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The U.S. (3-1) won 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 to remain in contention for the medal round. The U.S. meets Thailand (3-1) on Wednesday for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Amberg smacked six kills against UAE (0-4) and served three aces, a team-high.

On Monday, the U.S. suffered its first setback, a five-set loss to the Czech Republic (4-0).

This past June, two members of UCLA's Athletic Video department earned a 2011 Telly Award for their hard work on John Wooden documentary.

Ken Norris, longtime director of the athletic video department, and Joe Plonsky, earned a Bronze Telly in the category TV for Documentary for their production of "In His Words." Norris (producer) and Plonsky (editor) produced the retrospective on legendary icon John Wooden that was shown at the conclusion of the memorial service for Coach Wooden on June 26, 2010. The documentary included numerous clips of interviews of Coach Wooden, interspersed with photos that traced his life from start to finish.

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world. Awards are presented in the Silver and Bronze categories.

Outstanding Johnathan Franklin Feature in L.A. Times

Senior Thomas Amberg put together a great performance at the World University Games as he recorded a team-high eight blocks and seven kills in the USA's 3-0 win over Turkey. Game scores were 25-18, 25-9 and 25-20.

Amberg also recorded a .500 hitting percentage, added an ace and averaged 2.67 blocks per set as he led Team USA to victory. Senior Weston Dunlap also started in the match and chipped in with two kills and two blocks.

The next match for the United States is Monday, August 15th against the Czech Republic.
Senior volleyball players Thomas Amberg and Weston Dunlap helped lead the United States National Team to a 3-0 victory over Mexico in the first match of the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. Game scores were 25-17, 25-23, and 25-15.

Amberg had a team-high two blocks while also recording four kills in the match. Dunlap chipped in with two kills and one block against Mexico as well. Former UC Santa Barbara outside hitter Jeff Menzel led the U.S. with 15 kills on the night.

The next match for the United States is Saturday, August 13th against Turkey.

UCLA Top Producer Of NBA Rebound Leaders

Yahoo! Sports has posted an interesting article about rebounding in the NBA.

The article states that 83 current or former players have career rebound averages of 9.0 or higher, led by Wilt Chamberlain (22.89).

The Pac-10 (now Pac-12) has produced five players with NBA career rebound averages of 9.0 or higher and they are all from UCLA - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Swen Nater, Bill Walton, Kevin Love and Willie Naulls.

In fact, according to the article, UCLA has produced more players in this category than any school in the nation.

UCLA's Summer School Basketball All-Stars

This summer, six outstanding UCLA basketball alums are back on campus taking summer school classes.

Five of the Bruins returnees were starters in the NBA this past season. They are (in alphabetical order): Trevor Ariza, New Orleans Hornets; Baron Davis, Cleveland Cavaliers; Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves; Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Milwaukee Bucks; and Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder. Davis was the No. 3 selection in the 1999 NBA Draft; Westbrook was the No. 4 selection in the 2008 NBA Draft; Love was the No. 5 selection in the 2008 NBA Draft; Mbah a Moute was the 37th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and Ariza was the 43rd selection in the 2004 NBA Draft.

For good measure, 1995 NCAA Player of the Year Ed O'Bannon, who led the Bruins to their 11th NCAA title, is also in school, having attended first summer session as well. He was the No. 9 selection in the 1995 NBA Draft.

Arboleda Advances to SCGA Semifinals

Congratulations to sophomore golfer Anton Arboleda who is playing in the semifinals of the SCGA Match Play Championship this morning at Sandpiper GC near Santa Barbara. As of 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Arboleda was 2-up through eight holes. Yesterday, he defeated Joe Sanders 1-up in the Round of 16 and Jordan Nasser 1-up in the quarterfinals. Earlier this summer, Arboleda finished eighth at the Sahalee Players Championship and second at the Pacific Coast Amateur.

U.S. Women's Amateur Update

First round results are completed for five current and future Bruins at the 111th U.S. Women's Amateur at Rhode Island Country Club. Junior Lee Lopez was the top Bruin with an even par 71 and was tied for 15th. Senior Stephanie Kono and incoming freshman Erynne Lee were tied for 28th place after posting scores of 72 (+1). Junior Tiffany Lua was tied for 45th place at two-over par 73 and senior Brianna Do was tied for 125th after posting a 78 (+7). The top 64 players advance to match play following Tuesday's second round.

Bruins Advance at SCGA Match Play Championship

Congratulations to UCLA golfers Alex Shi Yup Kim and Anton Arboleda for winning their first round matches at the Southern California Amateur Championship at Sandpiper GC today. Kim won 3 & 2 over Brad Shaw of Los Angeles and Arboleda won 2 & 1 against Dick Engel of Lancaster. Second and third rounds will be played Tuesday with the semifinals and finals to be played on Wednesday.

UCLA Football To Appear On ESPN 3D

ESPN 3D will double the amount of college football telecasts this year as the network plans to air 20 regular-season games along with the Allstate BCS National Championship and five postseason bowl games. 

UCLA's Thursday night contest at Arizona (Oct. 20) is one of the 20 games on the schedule.

The network will kick off its second year of extensive college football coverage with two games in five days over Labor Day weekend when UNLV travels to Wisconsin on Thurs., Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. ET with Miami at Maryland on Mon., Sept. 5, at 8 p.m.

UCLA alum Justin Medlock, an All-American place kicker who concluded his Bruin career in 2006, has been named one of four Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Month for July, the Canadian Football League announced today.

Medlock was named the Special Teams Player of the Month. He is both place kicker and punter for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats' punter and kicker Justin Medlock has been named Gibson's Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month. In his first five games, Medlock has registered 32 punts for 1,342 yards (41.9 average, long of 64 ) and one single. Medlock is ranked fourth in the league in kicking points with 52, connecting on 12 of 14 field goal attempts (85.7%) and all 13 converts. His field goal average of 35.8 yards is the second highest in the league, with his longest coming from 55 yards. Medlock has also registered three singles and has contributed 52 points to the Ticats' 132 total points this season. This is Medlock's first season with the Ticats.
 
 
Sophomore Anton Arboleda qualified for the 2011 U.S. Amateur last night by winning a U.S. Amateur Qualifying tournament at North Ranch Golf Course in Westlake Village, CA. Arboleda finished the tournament with a score of five-under par and won by four strokes over the second place finisher. He will join teammates Gregor Main, Alex Kim and Patrick Cantlay in competing at the 111th U.S. Amateur, which will be played from August 22 to August 28 at the Erin Hills Country Club in Erin, Wisconsin.

Last year, Cantlay made the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur before losing to eventual champion Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State.
