In May 2002, the Acosta Athletic Training Center doors were opened. The state-of-the- art coed facility boasts 8,000 square feet of brand new modalities, rehabilitation equipment, walk-in whirlpools, SwimEx aquatic pool, and private offices.
Daily operation includes a comprehensive program entailing injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, reconditioning following surgery or injury, as well as education and counseling. The UCLA Medical Center, named 2004's "Best Hospital in the West" by US News and World Report, is the primary referral source for the student athletes and is in close proximity to the campus.
UCLA continues to be on the forefront of Sports Medicine. Dale Rudd, Director of Athletic Training and Rehabilitation, leads the department comprised of 13 full-time Certified Athletic Trainers and approximately 50 student interns. Dr. Gerald Finerman, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the UCLA Medical Center, has been the Director of the UCLA Sports Medicine for over 30 years. Team physicians are members of the Department of Orthopedic surgery or the Department of Family Medicine. UCLA's support staff consists of an array of exceptionally qualified and highly experienced medical professionals, which includes a physical therapist, nutritionist, sports psychologists, dentist, orthotist, massage therapist, and insurance coordinator. Each intercollegiate team is assigned a team physician, Certified Athletic Trainer, and student intern who are responsible for the health and well-being of the team. Student-athletes consult with our team physicians in the center's on-site physician's suite on a daily basis.
