Bruin players received many postseason accolades, including seniors Ricky Manning, Mike Saffer, Nate Fikse, and Mike Seidman, who were named first team All-Pac-10. Saffer was also named second-team All-American. UCLA football also prepared for its future by naming alumnus Karl Dorrell ('82-'86) head coach.

Under first-year head coach Tom Fitzgerald, the UCLA men's soccer team won its fourth national title in 2002, adding to the championships it captured in 1985, 1990, and 1997. At the College Cup in Dallas, the Bruins knocked off Maryland 2-1 before advancing to defeat Stanford for the third time this season, 1-0. The game-winning goal came with 1:02 remaining on the clock, when sophomore defenseman Aaron Lopez knocked in a free kick from senior midfielder Ryan Futagaki.
