UCLA Student-Athletes Welcomed Back To Campus

On the eve of the first day of fall classes, UCLA student-athletes, coaches and staff gathered at Drake Stadium on Sept. 24 for the third annual "Welcome Back Bruins Picnic". The event included food, games and the opportunity for new and returning Bruins to mingle and kick off the academic year.
A short program included a welcome from UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero, followed by the annual team recognition for academic success in the previous academic year. Men's Soccer received the 2007-08 Donald R. Shepherd Most Improved Team GPA Award, Women's Swimming earned the 2007-08 Donald R. Shepherd 2nd Highest Team GPA Award, and the Donald R. Shepherd Highest Team GPA Award for 2007-08 was earned by the Women's Volleyball Team.
The special guest of the evening was Bruin alumna Rose Gilbert. The student-athletes and coaches thanked Rose with a standing ovation for her generous donation to renovate the Rose Gilbert Learning Center.
Women's volleyball player Kaitlin Sather spoke on behalf of the Bruin Athletic Council, and Head Football Coach Rick Neuheisel ended the evening with words of encouragement by unifying the student-athletes with the common goal of embracing the tradition and excellence of UCLA.
