On the evening of Tuesday, November 6, close to 700 UCLA student-athletes, coaches and staff gathered in Pauley Pavilion for an historic occasion.

The UCLA Athletic Department has created The Wooden Academy... Building Character, Leadership, and Teamwork, and Tuesday night was its first session.

The evening began with UCLA Hall of Fame basketball player and current general manager of the WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury, Ann Meyers Drysdale. She shared her experiences as a Bruin, and spoke about the impact Coach Wooden has had on her life.

After a standing ovation from the crowd, Coach John Wooden spoke about how he created the Pyramid of Success. Coach shared many stories, including about his time at UCLA and his favorite poetry, and then answered questions from student-athletes.

The goal of The Wooden Academy is to provide a comprehensive leadership development program that is designed to educate and support the development of Bruin student-athletes in their pursuit to becoming successful leaders here at UCLA, and in preparing to be successful leaders in life after sport.

The program will utilize the expertise of coaches, staff, alumni and professionals to provide programming and interactive training on leadership development.
