Freshman forward Jason Kapono (Lakewood, CA/Artesia HS) of the men's
basketball team was selected the MET-Rx UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week for
the week of Dec. 27-Jan. 2.
Kapono scored the winning basket in UCLA's 55-53 win over Purdue Dec. 30.
With the score tied at 53 with just seconds on the clock, the freshman drove
the length of the court into the lane for a layin to give the Bruins a 55-53
lead with one second to play. He scored a game-high 19 points (8-14 from the
field, 3-5 from three-point range) with four rebounds, a career-high four
assists and one steal in a career-high-tying 39 minutes of play.
In UCLA's 68-66 win over Pepperdine Dec. 28, Kapono had his first career
double-double with 13 points (5-10 from the field) and a career and
game-high 11 rebounds. He added one assist in his 37 minutes of play.
Kapono is tied for the team lead in scoring with a 13.7 average and is third
in rebounding (4.9) while shooting 48.1% from the field and a team-high 45%
(18-40) from three-point range.
