March 21, 2013
Los Angeles, Calif. - The No. 12 men's track and field team heads to San Marcos, TX this weekend for Saturday's Texas State Elite Meet to take on No. 2 Arkansas and No. 4 Texas in a scored competition.
For the third consecutive year the UCLA men will face the Longhorns in a scored meet. The Bruins have split the last two meetings, taking last season's meeting 85-77 at Drake Stadium. UCLA is 7-2 all-time against Texas, including 6-1 at home.
In the 2012 victory, Bruin Maxwell Dyce set a meet record in the men's 200m dash (20.97), as did Mike Woepse in the pole vault (18-2.5). Both senior captains will look to repeat and defend their titles this weekend.
With this meet, the men waste no time getting into the thick of things in the 2013 outdoor season. Both Texas and Arkansas coming off extremely successful indoor seasons and are looking to keeping the momentum going. Arkansas captured their 20th NCAA Indoor Championship just a few weeks ago in front of their home crowd in Fayetteville and the team is poised to be one of the top teams in the outdoor season. Texas is coming off a Big-12 championship in the indoor season, and between the two squads, they will bring 29 indoor All-Americans to the track this weekend.
The Bruins will have their hands full this weekend in San Marcos, but they are looking forward to the challenge. Director of Track & Field Mike Maynard stresses the importance of competing with the nation's elite programs, and welcomes the opportunity to hit the track with the country's best.
"Our coaching staff believes and teaches our teams that competiveness is a learned skill that is gained through practice and repetition," Maynard said. "The Texas Elite Meet this weekend, and next week at the Texas Relays, will give our guys an opportunity to open up the outdoor season and compete against some of the top athletes and programs in the country. I'm excited to see how this team will respond to the challenges before us."
Bruin women Kimmie Conner and Tatum Souza will also join the men's team at this weekend's meet, looking for an extra day of competitive practice. They will see action in the 100m hurdles, shot put and javelin throw.
The meet kicks off Saturday, March 23rd, with the field events at 9:00am PT. Track events will begin at 1:00 pm. For live results, click here.
