Bruins Kick Off Indoor Track and Field Season
Dec. 5, 2012
The 2012-2013 indoor track and field season kicks off for the Bruins Friday, Dec. 7 as they head to Indianapolis, IN for the Hoosier Open hosted by Indiana University. The focus of this meet for the Bruins will be long distance runner Lane Werley in the 5,000m invitational race.
Werley, a sophomore, is coming off an outstanding season in cross country in which he earned All-America honors with a 25th overall finish at last month's NCAA Championships. He looks to continue his success in this weekend's trip to Indianapolis where he hopes to run under the 2012 NCAA Automatic Qualifying Standard of 13:44.60. The field is composed of other student-athletes who, like Werley, are coming off great cross country seasons and hope to hit the standard to take the pressure off as they move forward into the season.
Long distance coach Forest Braden seems excited about Lane's opportunity.
"Lane has earned this race," Braden said. "This is a good chance for him to get in there and mix it up with some outstanding athletes and go after a new personal best at the distance, but more importantly continue to get experience racing at the elite level."
This is the only meet for the remainder of 2012. The Bruins will resume competition in January when they head up to Seattle for the Washington Invitational on Jan. 25.
